What's that shim behind the first row of bricks for? Should you take it out now, or will the porch fall down?
Nice post :)

Cool post, COMF.
I kinda had you pegged as the "I'm at peace with nature" type.
It's nice (ain't it?) being able to watch your own little slice of nature, right outside your window on an easy Sunday morning while you drink that first (or third) cup of coffee? Seeing blue jays or cardinals fly and squirrels scamper around your own plot of earth makes you feel good, makes you feel like you own something. We're kings, man! Kings!!
.... 'cept....
... I got some damn birds that have built a nest in my fireplace. Not the fireplace, exactly. The chimney. They been doing that for years actually, and it's been cool with me. I thought I'd let it go so that I could teach the Little One a love of her natural world.
Only thing is: this year, seems a whole flock moved in. The chirping is interrupting my flow, you know? Time to do something up top this winter...
Anyway, like I said... cool post, COMF. Way cool.
p.s. Funny post, Frank. I bet he went out and checked!!
Cool story, waiting! I also have a squirrel visiting regularly. The scissortails (or whatever Englishman tells me they are) dive bomb the squirrel when he's here, dipping straight down at him and only veering away when they're about a foot away. They do this to me, too, except they veer away about three feet from me.
Englishman, yes indeed, that is them! There seems to be quite an extended family of them although I only ever see the mother and father fly up to the nest. There are about five of them circling around in the yard sometimes in the early evening.
Francois - those bricks are set like that at regular intervals around the house. I guess the bricklayer was having a boring day and decided to amuse himself. :)
Teejay and HS: teejay, Cygnus is the man to call for your chimney problems! And yeah, it is great. I'm near enough to the city to work in downtown Dallas, but I'm out in the country in my home. Got trees and pastureland all around me, and the citified version of wildlife (birds and squirrels) in my yard. I also seem to have a healthy population of frogs. I've sent a few scampering while mowing the grass, and one climbed up on my front sidewalk this evening and sat beside me, sharing in savoring the view.

COMF thanks for the lovely reminder of the one thing I really loved about living in TX... the incredible birds. Scissortails are gorgeous, aren't they?
My son has a mourning dove nesting in a corner of his front porch. She's on her third batch of babies this year. Yesterday one of them accidentally divebombed him while learning to fly.
BTW COMF, today is my son's first anniversary of sobriety. Color Mommie happy.
Love,
MD

I'm happy for you and him both, MD! Tell him it gets easier from here. I've been doing it for 7 1/2 years, and that's the reason I was able to buy this house!
More goofy birds...
