Ray's book was just icing on the cake.
I found the older WTS publications eye-opening. Of course, the lying elders, gossip and lack of love has helped many out the door. It was interesting to me to find out that the higher you get in the "organization" the worse it gets, not better.
Who is Ray Franz? Does anyone care anymore? I never read his book and I tell you the reason why. With all the press coverage on the molestation issue, why has he yet to make one comment to the media other than defend WT policy? If he really is the man of ethics as he presents himself to be, why does he not see children being raped as a problem? Twenty-five year old problems with WT is old news, a lot has happened since then and he seems not to care. He could have helped, he has done nothing.

Either way, I don't think Ray Franz is obligated to do anything. He wasn't obligated to write his books, he is not obligated to continue the fight on the Internet and elsewhere, and he is not obligated to help with the molestation issue.
Furthermore, Lee Elder is not obligated to help with molestation, and Bill Bowen is not obligated to help with the blood issue.
I don't think any of us should be castigated for the level of public involvement we choose.
To answer the question. If Ray Franz hadn't written his books, I would have probably wasted another year or so deciding it was all hogwash, but I'd be out by now. Once someone allows themselves to read "apostate" books and visit these web sites, they're already on the way out, they just don't know it, yet. With that thought in mind, I'd lke to welcome the two newest apostates to our fold... YouKnow and FredHall.

I feel this viewpoint unfair to Franz. Why should he carry the JW cross for everyones experience or issues? I believe he speaks from his experience and has contributed much because of it. Also, when has he "defended WT policy" in this matter?
www.escapefromwatchtower.com got me out, but that really isn't a very good website compared with some of the other. It still had some good info that made me think.
CofC really cemented things for me. Some of the biggest dub defenders have read it, I don't see how you can read that book and still think you're in God's org.
I wonder if Fred Franz ever read it. Probably not, he was too busy searching the scriptures in order to find more proof of the WT's authority and the impending doom of all non-Watchtowerists.
CofC was truly revolutionary in that the truth about the "truth" was exposed in a non-confrotational manner. The expose' was critical to anybody that had previous doubts.
This post seems to have attracted answers from those who left without the help of C of C. Me too. We stopped meetings in 1979 and were disfed in 1981 for apostasy. I read C of C in 1984.
We worked it out all by our selves.

I've never read anything Franz has written. Sometimes something is so wrong you just don't need help getting out.
