Anyone who was a dub many years ago remembers people dying in Malawi for the WBTS.In Malawi,dubs were encouraged not to have anything to do with the government and many were murdered..In Mexico,it was profitable for WBTS to encourage the people to do what the people in Malawi were not allowed to. I have 2 questions: Was there a monatary or political gain in it for WBTS?.If those people didn`t die for profit of some sort for WBTS,what did they die for?.For one,I know dead dubs sell magazines,the profits from that probably helped WBTS acquire property in Mexico...OUTLAW

Another "conscience" issue for Witnesses involved political party membership cards. When the ruling element in the African country of Malawi demanded that citizens purchase "party cards", the Watchtower Society took a stand against it. In adhering to this position, Malawian Witnesses faced imprisonment, beatings and severe mistreatment at the hands of government loyalists.
Meanwhile, in Mexico Witnesses were in the habit of bribing officials to obtain cards identifying them as members of the reserves who had fulfilled a year of military service. Not having the cartilla would result in some inconvenience, but not the sort of suffering Witnesses faced in Malawi.Franz relates in detail how Watchtower headquarters gave its approval to both policies, leaving African JWs to face brutal persecution, while permitting Mexican Witnesses to buy cards 'under the table.' This caused much suffering in Africa. And it helped cause the "crisis of conscience" Raymond Franz experienced as a member of the Governing Body whose votes enforced these contradictory rulings.

Hey Valis,thanks for the reply bud.I`m wondering if there was more to this than just bad religious policy.WBTS is very cunning when they want to be,and selectivly stupid when the need arises.They played the situation like a chess game.Lose a few pieces here,pick up the profits there.They do it all the time,and then pretend they know nothing.We have seen it over and over again.I have a hard time believing this situation was any different...OUTLAW

I think they just couldn't bear to step off a bad policy, but instead lay the burden on the flock. Besides...all that just gave them more ammo at CAs and DAs to prove that all the persecution implies they are the one and only canal of Jehovah. BTW, we need to meet and have some beers in the future...I bet we would raise Kingdom Hell....

hi outlaw,.................... some guesses from me;
1. ............. the gov body had made deals with the previous gov in malawi, and they were still supporting them. (they play polictics all the time)......... they didn't want to publicly show support for the new gov, so they let the members die over a 25 cent citizenship card.
2. it was great publicity!......... they turned the massacre into a publicity stunt, and the donations were rolling in, straight to headquarters, where they decide what to do with the money. the whole organization was motivated by the torturing and killing of the malawi members.
3. mexico was having a tremendous increase.......... bringing in the donations...... no need to upset that.

I have heard two things and I cannot prove either one:
1) The people in Malawi were mostly black.
I discounted this untill I read the history of people of color and the Watchtower. (African-Americans and Jews in general, Rutherford's deranged ramblings in particular) And untill I read the history of Watchtower and the African countries. Untill I read the stories, and saw accompanying photos in the Watchtower's publications, of how Watchtower attempts to 'Americanize' the Africans--their beautiful traditional dress are replaced by 'western' clothing as soon as humanly possible, and you read a lot of that in the yearbooks; of which I have most of them. The beautiful pictures you see of African women with their lovely traditional clothing and hair is not the 'reality' of day to day Watchtowerized African life.
2) Money. Watchtower does everything it can (and has since the time of Rutherford) to come into conflict with every basic human decency that humans have worked so hard for thousands of years to develop, and WHEN they are successful and the JW's GET PERSECUTED, Watchtower SCREEEAAAMMSSS for help from Amnesty International and the United Nations, among others. Therefore, resources that could be used to feed starving people and take care of whole communities devastated by natural disasters, gets diverted (as it does in Greece and some African countires) to help the poor JW's that have been duped by yet another AMERCIAN BUSINESS.

When I read about this in Ray's book I was sick, and had to put the book down to stomach what I had just read. I believe since the GB weren't the ones getting beaten and raped it was of little concern to them. Other than maintaining their stand and keeping the REAL truth of the matter a secret to everyone else, no telling why they did it. It is a horrible way to exercise power and doctrine over people's lives. Jesika

At last year's District Convention (memories of Ted jarasz' lonnnng prayer coming back... No Noooo) one of the speakers admitted that a lot of money taken IN here in the US was being spent in Africa for Kingdom Halls. Now WE all know that those Kingdom halls are four poles, a tin metal roof and dirt floors, but---never mind....So right now, not a lot of money was being made FROM the African countries ..
But wait---Consider Germany, 1930's to 1940's. In their Declaration of Facts (..We don't like the Jews/Jewry any more than you do Mr. Hiler) Watchtower stated that they went into Germany with American money and built printing plants and distribution centeers for their literature. (It seems this was one of the things Hitler was so pissed about, bad PR move there for Watchtower. Another bad PR move was the statment 'we have never taken a penny from the Jews, which Hitler KNEW was a lie). But then I think that if we closely examine Watchtower's literature placement, I think we will find Watchtower made its money back and then some.
But Malawians are not the Germans, and their memories seem shorter as well. That kind of money will NOT be coming back into Watchtower coffers. (Trust me, folks, the kind of money donated for African Kingdom Halls does not BEGIN to be accounted for by poles, a metal roof and dirt floors. I wager a good few days' pay Watchtower making money hand over fist with those donations) . So what to do?
Scream persecution!!! Persecution!!! Persecution!!! Along come the Untied Nations and the Amnesty International and God knows how many other relief organizations that fell for this technique--AGAIN--and there Wella!!, Watchtower doesn't have to feed and clothe and give medicines and adopt the little orphans of murdered adults...let the birdseed 'Satan's organization' do it..
Just like they rescued the German JW's from the prison camps. Don't fall all over yourselves with gratitude, WATCHTOWER!!!
