Another thing: The Gubment wouldn't neccessarily be implementing this system. What I had in mind was more a rogue Gnutella-style network of computers owned by average users banding together to make it work...if it's open source...then who will be able to control it?

Gnutella isn't as 'free' as you think.

And, the gubment (at least, the US gubment) WILL place restrictions on things. You've heard of 'carnivore', no? And 'echelon'?

We preach 'freedom of speech' a lot over here. All that really means these days is that you are allowed to say anything you want as long as the government agencies at least have the ability to monitor it.

(Not that they'd act on it outside of legal channels, of course - heaven forbid, this IS a democracy after all...)

Is it that bad over there? Here nobody gives a flying ****! Everybody's more concerned about having enough food to last the day & stuff...this place is for the most part very poor, and of course, most of our politicians are clowns. What I like to say is, "Having the desire to rule people automatically excludes you from being a person who should rule over people"...that applies to most politicians. At least you don't have to live RIGHT NEXT TO Mugabe But I am seriously worried about what I see in the media about America lately.

Maybe we should set up an Apostate settlement on the Moon. Just thinking about it, no more visits from Dubs EVER (unless the Tower buys a spaceship LOL unlikely!), total freedom, plus everybody will be able to jump 10 meters high! WHEE!

I was reading something this morning about "hashes" that do some incredible data compression. Perhaps that will require less space. I wonder if I have a CD in library-like surroundings why it would lose its data in a hundred years? I haven't spent any time thinking about this. It may be trivial, but I'm not sure at this point.

Standard CDROM media is STAMPED - so it's much more reliable than CDRs, which are chemical in nature...

    Hi Syn,

I took a peek into this thread because I'm a paper conservator and am always interested in new ideas/discussions about preserving stuff for posterity.... unfortunately I'm virtually illiterate when it comes to the things that happen inside computers, and don't have a clue about everything discussed up to this point, but I thought I'd pass this site on to you, just in case you might find it to be of interest:

storage, how to make the media last the longest in the least space...

    how to authenticate the media...

how to keep it from deteriorating and restoration of media (BIG BUSINESS) just ask the big businesses formerly at the World Trade Center

One interesting thing I read quite a while ago ...

The little snippets of genius such as sketches by a great artist or the scrawled lyrics or music of a great songwriter or computer are very valuable and of great interest.

Can you imagine going to a museum in 50 years time and seeing rows of Palm Pilots and the like ... "this is what he wrote his great memo on"

I love computers ... I like the logic & creativity but I also hate them.

Funkyderek: reminded me of when I went to a JW family's house to setup their modem and get them hooked up to the net and the kids wanted me to "copy the internet onto their computer". They wouldn't believe me that the disk wouldn't store it ... "can we get a bigger one from PC World?"
