Viewing the JW religion from the outside, I think the reason why people need to discuss it sooo much is because of the indoctrination that goes with it, and the feeling of being outright lied to when you realize the troof isn't the truth.. The Catholic's, or any other main-stream Christian religion that doesn't use destructive mind-control techniques don't leave scars in your long-term phychi like the JW's, or other like religions do...

I could join any main-stream Christian religion tomorrow, and then leave, and goto another main-stream Christian religion, and all in all, not much changes; the basic tenets of Chrisitainity are the same, and all of the main-stream Christian religions don't claim to be the exclusive truth, nor do they claim that you must be a part of them and them alone to be saved. And, of course, there is no shunning, or any other emotional blackmail used with them.. Literally, in main stream Christianity, your personal relationship with Christ and God are stressed, and whatever church that you feel most comfortable with is fine with them.. They still consider other denominations Christians also, and main-stream Christianity makes up the body of Christ, no matter which denomination you are... So, to them, you are a Christian wether you are Catholic, Protestant, Baptist etc. etc. etc....

So the JW's create an environment via their indoctrination that requires a time to heal that true Christian religions don't.. I think that's why the need for this board for ex-jw's..

For me, never having been a JW, I come here to learn more about the religion, because I feel a great sense of pain and anguish for these lost soles, and want to help them as much as I can, specifically a friend of mine who introduced me to the relgion.. I thank god every day that he gave me the good sense to research what I was being told by my friend, so I didn't fall for the religion.. But, in the process, I realized exactly how he was being mis-lead, and I feel it is my Christian responsiblity to help him, along with anyone else that I can to open their eyes.. Again, you won't find that need in main-stream Christian religions either, since they don't claim to be exclusive truth, or the only way to salvation...

Beroea, the way I see it, I would be great if many could just get pst the Watchtower. But, the WT gets so enmeshed in very facet of your life while in, it is difficult to just walk away unscathed. Every breath you take sees to be monitored and every word picked apart seeking weak and disorderly ones.

To have a place like this to fellowship with friends who have suffered similar intrusions into their lives does help sort out the brainwashing and lessen the pain and anger many feel when leaving. No other religion I have dealt with maintains such tight control over followers as does the JWs. Ripping families apart is not unusual for the JWs. Persecuting any who think for themselves and dare to question official party line is the norm. SInce the elder arrangement was instituted, they have been elevated from congregation servants to mini-gods. They are handed nearly absolute power and we all know how that corrupts.

So, why the need for this forum? Healing. After that, many stay around to visit with friends and to help others seeking a way out and to help newly escaped ones to heal.

For me, I would choose another tour in Vietnam over returning to the JWs. At least there, I could shoot back.

It's nice for people to know that as many friends as they may lose because of exiting the Watchtower, there are many more friends to gain.

Professor, I would like to add that the friends made here are not conditional friends. I see true caring for others here, one of the major fallacies of the Kingdom Halls. Their friendship is conditional on towing to the party line completely.

The truth is, it looks as though EX-JW's are LATE on the scene when it comes to establishing outreach movements toward remaining members. It would seem that the more repressive the religion, the more difficult it would be to establish organized opposition---and the more difficult it will be to stop it once it starts!!!!
