Hi All,
I usually don't like to talk about my health, but seeing some of you need encouragement, then maybe I should put my two sous in.
In a few months I will be seventy one years old. At one point in my life about thirty years ago, I was 30 to 40 lbs overweight, huffed and puffed around with any exertion, and found it hard to bend over.
It wasn't lack of exercise that created the weight, the work I did gave me lots of exercise, but my diet created the weight. I would drink a whole quart of whole milk for lunch etc, eat processed high fat meat slices. two helpings, dessert .
I lost most of my excess weight, by changing a few things.
No white bread, white rice, sugar etc. no processed foods whatsoever, little or no desserts, mostly fruit, use skin milk. I use whole grained bread, whole crain cereals, potatoes with skins, hardly no red meat, mostly chicken and fish.
I find it is hard to diet, count calories etc. When I want to lose some weight, I go on a three day fast for three days, usually on a weekend, because it makes me cranky. My intake is usually only water, or some veggie broth, because if I take more, then I take more than I should. These fasts once or twice a year lower my weight in ten pound increments. It also breaks up any bad eating habits I may have had, like going to the fridge, opening the door and looking for something to eat when I did not need it. It was some pattern I learned long ago.
I started to read health books. One most imortant thing I read is that the body requires essential fatty acids. Most of American diets do not have these acids. A little is found in the fatty foods we eat, so to meet our needs we crave fatty foods to get some supply. The rest of the fat, that is not essential, you know where that goes. Essential fatty acids are found in salmon and a few other fishes, evening primrose oil etc. If you don't get them, it is very hard to lose weight, you have to eat a lot of fatty foods to get the amount you need. There is a very good book, by Udo Erasmus, who did research on this subject.
I control diabetes with diet. I had a five plus by-pass heart surgery about three years ago. I have to take one small lipitor anti cholestrol pill daily, and also small tablet of blood pressure pill each day, along with an aspirin to thin blood out.
So I feel pretty good. Of course I have a devoted wife who wants to keep me around for a while to support me.
So it is possible to lose weight and maintain health. You too, can do it.
