When I first heard this song...I just listened to the truths that expressed.
I am sick of tired of being labelled as different things.
Take note of the two lines I put in bold and think of how true that sentiment is.
Must we continuely let our prejudice get the better of us? If we do it will be the end of us.

Real Men ---- covered by Tori Amos (Strange Little Girls)
Take your mind back - I dont know when
    Sometime when it always seemed
To be just us and them
    Girls that wore pink
    And boys that wore blue
Boys that always grew up better men
    Than me and you
Whats a man now - whats a man mean
Is he rough or is he rugged
    Is he cultural and clean
Now its all change - its got to change more
Cause we think its getting better
    But nobodys really sure
And so it goes - go round again
But now and then we wonder who the real men are
See the nice boys - dancing in pairs
    Golden earring golden tan
    Blow-wave in the hair
Sure theyre all straight - straight as a line
    All the gays are macho
Cant you see their leather shine
You dont want to sound dumb - dont want to offend
So dont call me a faggot
Not unless you are a friend
Then if youre tall and handsome and strong
You can wear the uniform and I could play along
And so it goes - go round again
But now and then we wonder who the real men are
Time to get scared - time to change plan
Dont know how to treat a lady
Dont know how to be a man
Time to admit - what you call defeat
Cause theres women running past you now
And you just drag your feet
Man makes a gun - man goes to war
Man can kill and man can drink
And man can take a whore
Kill all the blacks - kill all the reds
And if theres war between the sexes
Then therell be no people left
And so it goes - go round again
But now and then we wonder who the real men are

People are people - Depeche mode

People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully

So we're different colours, and we're different creeds
And different people have different needs
It's obvious you hate me, though I've done nothing wrong
I've never even met you, so what could I have done?

    I can't understand
    What makes a man
    Hate another man
    Help me understand

People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully

Now you're punching and you're kicking and you're shouting at me
I'm relying on your common decency
So far it hasn't surfaced, but I'm sure it exists
It just take a while to travel from your head to your fist

    I can't understand
    What makes a man
    Hate another man
    Help me understand

People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully

    I can't understand
    What makes a man
    Hate another man
    Help me understand

Actually 'Real Men' was written by Joe Jackson ( from the Night and Day album ).

HS---thats just a technicality but thanks for pointing out that it was WRITTEN by a man...maybe that will make the word go a bit further.

    Hi Spice,

Excuse my defensive strategy. I am songwriter who sees red when the worng names are taped to the right songs. I also know Joe personally and felt the need to set this straight.

    No harm meant - HS

HS--no harm taken...I write songs as well. Please let Joe know that his song really has deep meaning for me. I had only heard it on the Tori amos CD and she does a wonderful rendition of it IMO.

My whole point was really the meaning of the song..not really who wrote it...but I appreciate you setting the record straight. I like to give credit where credit is due.

Its a shame that many "men" still feel this way....

    Boys Don't Cry -----the Cure

    I would say I'm sorry
If I thought that it would change your mind
But I know that this time
    I have said too much
    Been too unkind

I try to laugh about it
Cover it all up with lies
    I try to
    Laugh about it
Hiding the tears in my eyes
    'cause boys don't cry
    Boys don't cry

I would break down at your feet
    And beg forgiveness
    Plead with you
    But I know that
    It's too late
And now there's nothing I can do

So I try to laugh about it
Cover it all up with lies
    I try to
    laugh about it
Hiding the tears in my eyes
    'cause boys don't cry

    I would tell you
    That I loved you
If I thought that you would stay
But I know that it's no use
    That you've already
    Gone away

    Misjudged your limits
    Pushed you too far
    Took you for granted
I thought that you needed me more

Now I would do most anything
To get you back by my side
    But I just
    Keep on laughing
Hiding the tears in my eyes
    'cause boys don't cry
    Boys don't cry
    Boys don't cry

    A real man?

Someone who is secure enough about himself not to worry whether someone else considers him a real man or not.

Battle of the sexes essentially is best explained this way.

Women have changed their opinions (as is their right ) about what they like in a mate. This changes frequently.

Men just hobble along trying to keep women happy ..I think we all know the reasons behind that. lol
