I think there are 2 issues going on here.
(1) Do they appeal and have more of their dirty laundry aired for the public and their members to see. I think even if the did win on appeal (and depending on the tactics used in the court room e.g technicalities etc) they could very well lose in the court of public opinion. The worst thing they would want is to be painted as the bad guys who are using technicalities to get out of helping victims.
(2) Then again I think they are been forced to follow through on it. Because they know full well if they don't, and an unfavorable, costly judgement is made. The flood gates will open, and then there is going to be some serious shit hitting the fan. Can an organisation that possibly is already having financial troubles not afford to do everything in its power to get out of it. If this thing gains traction I think the idea of satanic media and apostate lies won't be so palletable to the R&F. Well those are my thoughts anyway.

The Org calculated that by "cancelling" all construction & refurbishment loans, and announcing that 'mother' will now "pay for everything", they could plunder the excess in every congregation's bank account now, and forever more - with total acceptance by the sheep! Such guaranteed revenues could be used to source funding from financial institutions to implement grandiose schemes - as yet unknown.
However, they have to cauterise any 'bleeding' - regardless of bad publicity, because a continual haemorrhaging would seriously affect the Org's credit worthiness and ability to repay the lenders.
We can hope.
