Single Sisters

Faye - I couldn't agree more. I was so shallow back when I was a JW. Always worried about looking better than everyone else. Being young, thin, and pretty was your ticket to getting invited to the parties or getting asked to join quick build crews, or even to work at bethel. It also helped to get the attention of the "normal" brothers you wanted to date.

Then all the nutty church lady types would get mad at you when brothers invited you places or came to your hall to visit you.

Well, it IS a religion completely about appearances, after all. How many hours are turned in, how often hands are up. It makes sense so much effort goes into appearances.

Got quite a chuckle on this thread. I can relate since we have our share of older frumpy looking sisters in our cong, too. Mind you not all older single sisters are frumpy, Some are from broken marriages, widows, other circumstances. They remain single because of the available single frumpy, smelly men in the cong.

Of course we can poke fun at "desperate sisters" - but in the end these persons are just CULT victims, stressed by the sexual repression the organization and its many Pharisee rules puts on them.

They have been denied the right to experiment and even have a severe guilt trip if they masturbate.

Seeing many around you at young age getting married and knowing that by 25 you will be viewed as an old maiden, does make one desperate.

    Sad

I knew a single sister in my congregation (she is now in her late thirties), she was basically held down all her life, no boyfriends, no experimenting, no nothing. She started a relationship with someone at the office, a non witness. Well you guessed it JC, disfellowshipped. She has been living with him for over a year now.

She is now on my list of one of the happiest people on earth.

    Driving Force:

Hooray for that single sister who found a guy at work at now has a REAL life away from the unhealthy sick environment of the Witness religion.

If she stayed there she would be watching the clock tick away with absolutely no chance of finding anybody! She might get a pathetic invitation now and then to some barbecue or baby showers and the like where they are looking for a gift. That would be the extent of her "social life" and prospects. What a joke.

The only thing she would be wanted for would be to do favors for all the users. All the religion wanted was favors and money and they got neither from me!

Good for her. I am so glad I got the hell out of there!

This is a mysoginistic cult but as the men running it also have women in their families, these "privileged" sisters play a very important role shaping the culture of the organization.

Many sisters have an attitude like the passanger in the movie Airplane when she says to another: "We are going to die, but at least I am married."

Marrying only in the Lord actually gives men like Billy Pilgrim a chance.

Desperation is in every KH. I mean marriage is one of the only activities condoned in being a JW, so it's a pretty big deal to those man-seeking frumpaluffaguses. Timeline of being a JW: be indoctrinated at an early age, miss out on tons of fun other kids get to have, get baptized dedicating yourself to a lifetime of being a non-thinking repeater of ancient writ, get married to a frumptastic fellow non-thinker, have and indoctrinate your own brood, and then die "in the truth," holding out hope that in the next life you'll get to do some things you actually want to do.

As a side note, talking about the goofy dress standards. I remember going to this past year's Annual Meeting and the stupid rhetoric about how the sisters shouldn't be wearing "Spanx," he really meant Yoga/tight workout pants, which brings up the issue of the GB just being so far out of touch. I mean, if you're going to denounce something, at least get the name of the thing you're denouncing right! Also too, this is more of that "rape-culture," vibe, basically blaming sisters for causing brothers' inappropriate thoughts.

Then the whole brothers in skinny pants, or bright dress clothing, "calling attention to themselves." Just step in line, be modest and boring. I've always found the unwritten "no beard," rule weird too, I mean we see nothing but beards in the publications but any brother having a beard is a no-no.

It's all too tedious and overbearing, it's ridiculous.

Faye I know what you mean , but to explain the difference to someone who has only known " religion " inside a KH is hard . Women in my church are equals . We have male and female lay readers , it is entirely possible that soon we may have - shock , horror - a woman vicar !.

So women don't need to cling onto a man' s coat tails to be " somebody " .Some very sexist and patronising remarks here .As designer pointed out the women you are moaning about are the victims of a sexist , male led organisation . How ironic that those men who subjugate the women then insult them for following the man made rules!
