Yesterday I was approached by a man who offered me a free stress test. I immediately recognised this as a Scientology scam (OK, he was standing outside the Scientology building) but it got me thinking.

Ireland is a small country, and over 90 percent of the population are Catholic. Most of the rest are Anglican or Presbyterian. Dublin, however, where I've been living for the last three years is much more culturally diverse than the rest of the country. While I've been living here I've come across Scientologists, Mormons, Raelians, Hare Krishnas, several varieties of born again Christian and even some Catholics preaching publicly in some form. I have never seen any Jehovah's Witnesses, nor any evidence that they exist. Not a single copy of The Watchtower, not so much as a tract. In three years!

At least in this city, their claim to be the only ones preaching - or indeed to be preaching at all - seems utterly absurd.

Where I lived preaching was confined to just a few streets around the book study group areas , which would get done every few weeks at the same time of day. Most areas were hardly touched and no one did not at homes.

I think most other religious groups who preach tend to focous on were people are rather than going door to door.

A local Christian group has called to my door at least twice in the last year. It seems everyone's doing it except the JWs!

funkyderek, Maybe " You Know" could put you down as a possible bible study, being that nobody has called at your door lately

When I went out with a car group, they would not do door-to-door.All they would do is ride around placing magazines at homes where somebody had accepted the literature before. They hardly ever answered the door but they left the mags.stuck in the door anyway. They would also drive very slowly around to several washaterias and offices and leave mags. The rest of the morning would be spent at Mickey D's,their favorite hangout.I have lived in my present house for 3 years and have never been contacted by them. Not like when I was young and the pioneer sister I always went with wouldn't even let me stop for a drink of water.

    Funky,

You sound disappointed. I know enough die-hard JW's in Dublin to have them track you down and preach to you until you kidneys dangle from your ears if you like....lol

A JW free environment has been given to you and still you do not believe in God....lol

They have been in our district twice in the past 5 years.

Seldom are they seen around town, not like they used to be.

Perhaps, they've all found alternative witnessing better, eh?

    Cheers, Ozzie

Maybe when they got rid of all the snakes in ireland, the dubs went too?

By the way--is that true? There are no snakes in Ireland? In which case I am crossing the pond, I HATE SNAKES...
