sir82 - "And lets not forget the 7th Day Adventists, which cousin are they?"

More like the weird and somewhat desperate uncle.

Anyone else notice how ultra-bland 7th-Day Adventists have become? So adept at fitting in with their chameleonic ways that they are barely recognizable from other groups. Time was when this odd left over from the Millerite offshoots stood out as studiously distinctive and principled - but the drive to seamlessly fit in has rendered them the Reader's Digest of the religious world. I read a copy of their Signs magazine recently - colorfully presented - and was hard pressed to find anything of substance or that identified who they were, proving that some religious groups don't so much die out or disappear but morph into a bland dollop indistinguishable from the next one. I would politely suggest they extend the Sabbath rest from Saturday to the following Friday evening and be done with - but their blending in renders such a suggestion redundant.

I wouldn't be surprised if the same group runs several cults.

This actually happens in nature, as a matter of fact.

When the environment of a particularly specialized species changes dramatically, that species doesn't always go extinct; sometimes it'll adapt to the new environment by interbreeding with a genetically similar species, producing a fertile hybrid species, thus ensuring that the genome continues to survive in some form.

Cases in point: polar bears and grizzlies, wolves and coyotes, Neanderthals and Cro-magnons...

Steve your assessment on the 7 day adventist is very accurate as a former SDA I keep up with their evolution. The SDA are currently in conflict with the doctrine of ordination because some conferences ordain women some do not . I have read articles that SDA write comparing the Anglicans with their own church and the problems along the way.

Unconfirmed rumour but was told one GB member was once a mormon and that's where the family worship evening came from?

I think a lot of the control came with Rutherford and Knorr. I don't believe it was there in the beginning.

Mormons have outperformed JWs. Having a tithe helps. Most Mormons probably meet it. Making them very wealthy. It's probably like 10%. And I think their missionaries are funded by family. And they're always young. So the face of Mormonism at your doorstep is always young guys. You don't see the beat-up old pioneer that JWs throw at your doorstep.

So, I can see where Mormonism can attract people. Plus, it used to be pretty much most of Utah was Mormon, so everywhere you go are Mormons both keeping an eye on you and reinforcing the religion.

I don't think the JWs have this advantage. Yet many things are similar.
