Yes, it depends on what you are interested in but "In Search of Christian Freedom" is a must read and shows a lot of what went on behind the scenes within the GB and at bethel.

"Apocalypse Delayed" by Jim Penton is also very good (for the overall history of JWs form pre-Russell onwards whereas something like "The Gentile Times Reconsidered" is an indepth analysis of the 607/1914 chronology.

There are also others on more specific subjects or details of errors the WTS has made etc but I would recommend starting with those.

OK, thankyou for all them comments. I've been sold the following and am going to log onto Amazon and buy:

"In Search of Christian Freedom" Franz

"Man's Search for Meaning" by Victor Frankl.

and Anthony Robbins "UNLIMITED POWER" from refiners comment in the hypnosis thread.

possibly "Shouting Fire" by Alan Dershowitz but you didn't really say enough about it so I'll have to look it up.

Ballistic, before you buy anything, have a look at

    www.bartleby.com/196/

If that doesn't work put The Golden Bough By Frazer in your search engine, its really fascinating and all free on line.

IF you enjoy "history", here is a link to "DAYS OF DELUSION", which is a book that chronicles the Millerite Movement of the 1840s, from which the Second Adventists emerged, including Charles Taze Russell's Watchtower Society.

This book contains a lot of "gems", such as the fact that "signs in the heavens" appeared in 1843, which seemed to provide biblical support to the Millerite's prediction that Christ was returning in 1843, very similar to the fact that "war and reports of war" appeared in 1914 seemingly supporting the Watchtower's prediction that Christ was returning in 1914.

Given the societal circumstances which existed in the 1840s, individual Millerites behaved much as did JWs prior to 1975.

Well worth the time for those intellectually inclined:

A completely different look -"Crack in the Cosmic Egg" - Joseph Chilton Pearce

Book will give you a completely different perspective on what we consider reality. And from all the books everyone suggested, may I add Eveylin Woods 7 day Speed Reading Course (it's like $3.95U.S.). It helped me go from a snail's pace (couple hundred words a minute) to over 1200 wpm. You can really burn through books at that rate. But be warned - it sticks with you. I find myself being able quote WTS books in my sleep because of her course...

    Back to the books,
