WE all have a brain but using it is another---hopefully he will leave the org and become even more independent in his decision making..WE had the B.S. for 3 yrs when I was a kid and my parents allowed me to start dating and cuz my dAD WAS ONLY a person of good will TOM (catholic) WAS MY FIRST boyfriend---we started to go steady and he gave me his St. Christopher medal -- I wore it into the BOOKSTUDY--well guys you can only image what happened next...I was banished from MY own living room and I could not come back until I took it off AND MOM went with me and told me to just put it down my sweater where BS leader would not see it RIGHT BETWEEN MY BOOBS AS they say out of sight out of mind !!! dmouse, most scanners have a "preview" mode that lets you select the amount of the scanner area that you want to capture. You can resize the "capture" box to exclude all the space around the article.
Is this really news? When I was in, the vast majority of witnesses would have known without having to ask that Harry Potter and LOTR were on the taboo list.
Does anybody remember a "special talk" in the seventies, when Star Wars was all the rage, that wasn't really a talk at all, but just the playing of a recording, where the theme was "helpful beings who are not from earth" or something like that, and they kept playing the Star Wars theme in the background all through the talk? I remember attending this in Houston at the Colliseum. Turned out the "helpful beings" were angels.

My fundy brother and his "super fundy" wife are totally against Harry Potter. Deminz you know. They are horrified I read the books to my five year old and bought the DVD. Lord of the Rings is their favorite movie next to Star Wars. They just don't see the hypocricy.

I used to listen to the WT discourage us from listening to music that had the name Satan in them.
I just checked the Sing Praises song book, and guess what? The Name Satan is in there 30 times!!!
We had to sing the name Satan @ the KH, I remember one song was changed as the light got brighter with regard to demons!

As the light shining on Gods truth became ever brighter in harmony with Proverbs 4:18, it was found necessary to change songs that had been in previous songbooks. That was true with the current Song 215. In 1974 we came to understand that Noahs ark pictured our spiritual paradise, not the Kingdom. (See The Watchtower, 1974, page 634.) So the line in the older songbook Flee at once to the ark of salvation, To the Kingdom of God that is here! was changed to Act at once! Make a full dedication; Serve the that is here.
Among other refinements in the interest of accuracy are the following: In the new system of things, there will be no more evils to dread, rather than no more demons to dread, for Gods people do not dread demons. (Song 129) In line with Jesus words at Matthew 6:22, Song 26 admonishes us to keep our eye simple rather than our sight single.
In several instances a certain melody was given a new set of words that appeared to be more effective and useful. Song 60, Gods Kingdom of a Thousand Years, uses the melody of Song 86 in the previous songbook. The lyrics for Song 2, Obeying God Rather Than Men, are an expansion of those of former Song 79. It seemed that this theme deserved a full page rather than a half page.

Thanx Comf, I know about the preview mode...I have no idea why the picture is showing like that, it's never done that before and it isn't like that on the original!
Actually, there is an elder in our congregation who loves Harry Potter. I know for a fact that he will totally ignore the Society's advice on this issue. I also know another elder who is the fanatical type aand who insists on not letting his children watch virtually anything (he wouldn't let them watch Casper - the friendly ghost, for example)
I don't suppose this article will make any difference in the long run, a lot of JWs are starting to ignore much of this nonsense anyway.
Another piece of evidence that the Society is losing its stranglehold on the lives of the brothers.
