A few illustrations from WWII serve to show how Stalin viewed his people.
Early in the war the Soviet Air Force was using prisoners to man the tail guns on their dive bombers. They would put the guy in with no parachute thinking that he'd have some incentive to shoot better. Didin't work. They stopped doing it when they realized the prisoners were shooting the tails off their own planes.
After the war an American general was showing a Russian General all the specialized equipment we had for clearing mine fields. The Russian said that when he ran into a mine field he cleared it by marching some infantry over it.
What a nice bunch to have running your country.

Stalin was really freaked out by Hitler. Hitler made him look pretty stupid when he marched in and took over half of Russia! He was worried that Hitler would fool him again.
But yes, STALIN was a cruel bastard. Would Hitler have killed more if he had won???
