An adorable surprise tonight....

I was SO tired tonight and could barely wait to snuggle up with my Diego. For some reason, probably the neverending headache, or the neverending thinking and analyzing process - I laid there wide awake while my two dogs snored. How rude!

Then I heard a strange sound out my window. Just below my window is the deck, and on the deck were 3 garbage bags that had not made it to the bin out front. Something was digging furiously into my garbage! How rude!

I got up to the window and cast a nasty eye downward and two fluffy figures made themselves apparent. I began hissing like a cornered cat would do. One got startled and sorta took off. I watched... do cats walk like that I wonder? Curiousity got to me, and then the dogs went wild. Couldn't be cats. I saw waddles, and stripes and bandit eyes. Raccoons on my deck! How sweet!

The second was bolder than the first and stuck around despite Diego's superbark at the deck door. The lil guy/gal? crawled up the railing and onto the other side and walked across that way, instead of on top. (reminded me of how Mario moved in those castles with Nintendo) Then he stopped for a nibble at the bird feeder and with Diego practically frothing now, decided to leave. How sad!

I've lived here five years and never seen one single raccoon. This isn't the first time our garbage was on the deck. These weren't full grown raccoons, cos they were only cat sized. Babies! How adorable!

I now have to clean up the mess these two very noisy bandits made - but in the morning. 2:30am and I'm wide awake, with dogs now on standby. At least it was something different instead of the usual cat fights or sirens etc. I remember these dudes relatives flipping garbage cans at the campground in the dead of night. Watching that lil one skirt my deck was amazing. I wonder where their mom is.

Guess I'll warn the neighbors when the sun wakes up. Thot I'd share. T'was cute

Thanks for sharing that Mimilly! They're darned cute little critters aren't they? We don't get them on this side of the pond, we just get foxes ravage our bins instead.

Mim, I loved it tonight when you came into chat and told us about these cute little coons on your deck!! We used to have a lot more little critters like that here in Portland, OR, before we started getting so citified. grrrrrr

Makes me wish I was out in the country! :)

    Nice story, Mimilly!

We don't have racoons here in Oz either, but they sound very similar to possums, which often come out at night and scrurry across the roofs and in the native trees.

    Mimilly:

You'll never be free of the little bastards now. Get yourself one of those super-soaker water guns. You may as well have some fun while your garbage is displayed across the province for all to see.

I just love Racoons. When I was living with my mom a few years ago, they would always come up on her deck too and eat the cat food. If they get used to you you will eventually be able to feed them out of you hand.

How sweet Mimilly (except for the extra work cleaning up after them!)

The most exciting thing we get in our garden are cats

We live in suburbia, but not too far from farmland and forests. Our back yard has seen all kinds of wildlife. Since springtime, we've had rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, groundhogs, raccoons and even a skunk. We try not to encourage their presence (we don't put out 'people food' for them), but the kids love gathering up pinecones and seeds and putting them in piles on our patio for the varmints.

The food must be sparse in their natural habitat if they'll venture out to where people are.

Of course, raccoons are pretty bold and not too afraid of humans, so they'll go to whoever has the best garbage to eat.

Just be careful -- as cute and adorable and cuddly as they appear, raccoons can carry rabies.

    Love, Scully

scully - that's one of my worries that they're around. My daughter told me she heard that rabies was in our province now (hadn't been before).

The critters actually didn't make any mess. Awful noisy digging! I did however, hear them flip someone else's garbage can. (Only a raccoon knows how to do that perfectly)

Ona - I'm in suburbia. It use to be 'on the outskirts' until someone decided to cut down the trees and build housing. We certainly still have swaths of green, but I never thought I'd see these critters on my deck.

expatbrit - Yeh, I know, and if they come back, I'll call the proper authorities to have them re-located.

lilacs - As much as I looooove animals, my dogs would never allow these strange critters to stay peacefully. Plus - there is always the rabies threat. That's why I said I'd warn my neighbors in the morning.

    damn they're cute tho!
