Tony is king of the jungle
22.28PM BST, 8 Sep 2002
Disc jockey Tony Blackburn has been voted the king of the jungle by viewers after the final episode of "I'm a celebrity... get me out of here!"
The Capital Gold radio host reigned supreme in the jungle Down Under as the public chose him over tantrum-prone socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson to win ITV1's hit show.
The endurance show final brought to an end two weeks of roughing it in the Australian bush which started with eight minor celebrities all raising cash for charity.
And Tarzan Tony, who was the first DJ to spin a disc on the launch of Radio One in 1967, clearly hit the right notes with the viewers as they voted him jungle champion.
The ever-calm vegetarian looked delighted as show hosts Ant and Dec announced the winner and put the last of the C-list adventurers out of their misery.
He won 55 per cent of the 1.5 million votes cast - the biggest of the show.
The DJ's success means the largest block of cash from the show goes to his chosen charity, the National Autistic Society.
Tara, a self-confessed former drug addict, was raising money for London's Chemical Dependency Centre, which will get a slightly reduced contribution than Tony's cause because the donation is based on the percentage of votes from the public.
During the TV adventures, viewers were asked to vote for those celebs they wanted to stay with each phone call raising cash. Blackburn won the nation's hearts as he remained the most calm throughout the fretful fortnight which saw most forest dwellers at each other's throats.
The show began with eight celebrities on Sunday August 25. The other six were ex-boxer Nigel Benn, spoon-bender Uri Geller, singer Darren Day, comedian Rhona Cameron, model Nell McAndrew and Christine Hamilton, wife of disgraced former Tory minister, Neil.
Tempers soon frayed as the unlikely mix of personalities spent the first week together and had to carry out individual Bush Tucker Trials to win food for the camp.
The tests saw Benn bitten by a snake and spend an hour alone in the bug- infested jungle, Geller eat live grubs, Cameron lie in a coffin of creatures and Day undergo two trials in a row, including a swamp of creepy crawlies and sticking his hand in boxes of mystery monsters.
But it was the tantrums and arguments that hit the headlines and Tara found herself at the forefront. She fell out with Day after he disclosed she had been passing him secrets notes asking for sex, which she later confessed to but described as "innocent".
Tara also made two bids for freedom as she ran off into the bush but was returned to camp by the show's security.
Other verbal conflicts saw Benn at loggerheads with Cameron, during which he said he would have "knocked her sparko" had she been a man.
Day also fell out with Cameron and Hamilton rowed with Tara. DJ Blackburn remained one of the calmest and became one of the favourites as the numbers started to dwindle during the second week as the public voted contestants off.
Model McAndrew earned a reputation for saying virtually nothing and enjoying the washing up while Geller constantly tried to use his psychic powers to help his colleagues.
On hearing the result, Tony kept repeating "I can't believe it... that's most unexpected".
Just before the result, the viewers heard Tara baring her soul to Tony the previous evening: "I was always the black sheep of the family... my brother and sister were the winners in our family".
Tony consoled her: "You're an attractive girl... no-one meeting you knows that". He advised her to be "a little more thick-skinned about things."
But he went on to reveal: "I was the number one disc jockey and had everything going for me but I wasn't secure in the way I looked or the way I felt."
The pair exchanged a hug before turning in for the night.
When greeted by presenters Ant and Dec the next morning they admitted they had enjoyed the experience very much, had no regrets and had learned lots about themselves.
