I keep coming across these 2 words, not just here, but all over the web.

I'm confused! Surely "noone" is spelled "no-one"?

What about "loose"? Doesn't loose mean not tight, liable to come apart?

If I lose something, then I have lost it surely. Is it correct for me to loose something too, rather than lose it?

Or am I completely loosing it here....!

    Or losing it.

It's those dashed Americans and their "simplified" English again!!!

Not only must they try and get us all hooked on fonix with "simplified" spelling that spawns abominations before the Oxford like "analyze", but they wish to kill the gentle hyphen too!

Thus coordination instead of co-ordination. And noone instead of no-one. Foul and beastly.

    Toodle-oo.

    Poor Englishman,

I have a bit more trouble with the phase that people use ....."I COULD CARE LESS"

It is a pet peeve of mine........the majority of people in the US say it that way......Once and for all people.....

It is" I COULDN'T CARE LESS".................think about it!!!

I don't know if you Brits use that expression....so, if you don't know what I'm talking about.........carry on then............ dj

According to Strunk and White's The Elements of Style "no one" is correctly spelled "no one" -- no hyphen and NOT "noone".

Regarding the hyphen: "When two or more words are bomined to form a compound adjective, a hyphen is usually required. 'He belonged to the leisure class and enjoyed leisure-class pursuits.' 'He entered his boat in the round-the-island race.'

"Do not use a hyphen between words that can better be written as one word: water-fowl, waterfowl. Your common sense will aid you in the decision, but a dictionary is more reliable. The steady evoluation of the language seems to favor union: two words eventually become one, usually after a period of hypenation.

" bed chamber bed-chamber bedchamber / wild life wild-life wildlife / bell boy bell-boy bellboy" (Stop blaming the Yanks for everything, er, every-thing???? every thing?????, expat!!!!)

As for lose vs. loose: One loses one's keys or one's hair. One loosens a knot or a tie.

I am not a good speller. When I e-mail, I can use spell check. When I post here, I do not have spell check available on my web tv. With that said, I too have been puzzled by how often "noone" is used instead of no one.

lose - To LOSE your watch

loose - The nut was loose, the guy was insane.

Easy! <RANT>It always annoys me when people use "loose" instead of "lose" - that extra O can totally throw me off when I'm reading something...</RANT>

When I think of phonetic spelling I think of Winston Church-hill???? When I think of a simplified language, I think of George Bernard Shaw. I think intelligent Brits were trying to do something about the Gawd-awful tricks of the English language before American Phonetics got its start. If you haven't read "Pygmalion" (sp???) you really should. George gives the language and those of Great Britain who speak it a pretty good going over, with humor of course. I wonder if e.e.cummings got some of his ideas on punctuation from him?

By the way, many thanks to you and your Prime Minister. Your genuine friendship and support is really supported.
If the terrorists ever achieve the goal stated by their idol (may his shattered bones even now be drying in the sands of Afghanistan) and a mushroom cloud sprout over New York, London, or Paris as he and his would love to have it do, then whether to attack would be a moot point and the poor innnocents of Iraq would be in a whirlwind of destruction beside which an incursion to depose Saddam would seem insignificant. The Libyan freighter turned away on 9-11 could have been the vehicle. I am grateful that it wasn't.
