The latest Question From Readers shows a picture of kids playing poker for pennies. The bottom line: Christians don't do this.It endangers spirituality."Christians who enjoy board or card games as recreation would be better advised to keep a penciled score or to play the game simply for fun without keeping score. Wise Christians who care about their own spirituality as well as that of their friends and family avoid the practice of gambling--even for small amounts of money."

I read it too, and found it rather humerous. Even implying that giving points should be avoided, although it did state that points could be given. (Woow, what freedom).

Well, they may well be right.
One night, whilst playing 7 card stud, I had 4 jacks. I lost. The other chap had a low running flush.
On the other hand, I won Her Ladyship in a casino! Truly.

We play for pennies in my family; it is better than toothpicks. It's just a way to keep score. Sometimes we use poker chips if we have enough. But no one ever cashes in.
And the idea of not keeping score is ludicrous. I have yet to hear of anybody DF'd for gambling. Wasn't it the WTS that said investing in the stock market was gambling but did a 180 (especially since they want to invest your money for you now; see the November 2002 WT article on donating to the WTS.)
The WTS sure keeps its priorities straight.

Blondie, when did the Society ever say that investing in the stock market was gambling?

Minimus,
I never did read it in print, but in our congregation is was considered wrong. The only thing I could find in print was in a Rutherford book. While talking about the new world, he said that people would do honest work (I assume picking fruit off trees), and there would be no stock brokers around.

Larc, I remember that the old books hated those stockbrokers. My uncle was one for years. He used to invest for some CO's, DO's and prominent elders for years.

Just to remind you that these are by no means new rules. Even counting points in order to win over the other was discouraged 50 years ago.

minimus, that is what my grandfather said and he was from the Rutherford era. I have found a lot of older witnesses who feel that way. The WTS recently came out with an article trying to dispel that thinking. One older brother said after reading that article that he would still not invest as it was gambling. He says he will just keep it in his CD and earn honest interest. I tried to explain that the bank is investing his money in the stock market but he wouldn't listen. "Don't confuse me with the facts."
