I argued this point years ago, with our Circuit Overseer. I wish I had kept a copy of the letter I sent him. (My husband and another elder signed the letter too) One thing I said is that all of the Bible writers, AND Jesus Christ had beards. In Israel, a man was REQUIRED to wear a beard. Why are they making such an issue of this subject, especially since the WT had just said they don't have rules? He called my husband (not me) and apologized for the talk he had given at the Circuit Assembly the previous week about beards. He did it on the part where they address needs of the circuit. There was one person in the audience with a beard, who was a close friend of ours. I said in the letter, he should have spoken to him privately, instead of embarrassing him in front of the entire circuit.

During Russell's time, beards were very common. Look at old photos from that time frame. Many, if not most men, wore beards. During WW2, service men were clean shaven, and that custom spread, so a few years into Rutherford's "reign", it wasn't as common anyway. What was said about his wanting them clean shaven because Russellites weren't, makes perfect sense too.

In the past 15 years, or more, beards have become very common again. I have been to doctors who have very well groomed beards, and I thought nothing of it, even when I was a witness. My new dentist has chin whiskers. There are men with very unnattractive beards, and there are clean shaven men, who look pretty scary too. Beards aren't the issue, in a threatening looking person, but they can be.

We had a CO many years ago who, before coming to our circuit, made some

very strong statements against beards Saturday afternoon of the circuit assembly program. The DO felt the need in his closing talk the next day to retract what the CO had said and stated that some things that are said from the platform are the speaker's personal opinion and not necessarily backed by the Society.

There is nothing wrong with a neat well trimmed beard in many localities today. There are still some who are strong-minded on the subject and congregation conscience is a factor in making decisions as to whether a brother with a beard will be used or not. Sometimes though, the congregation is not bothered by the beard, but the elders are too afraid to make a decision that may be called into question by a CO with a strong personal dislike for beards.

I had a problem with this years ago, because my hubby looks soooooooooooooo sexy with a beard or go T (spell??) but they could never give me any biblical reasoning for it. Just said they wanted clean cut men going door to door. Whatever!!! Hubby now has one. I dont see the problem with it, that is as long as I dont have any, anyway!!!

So what about an inactive, sparse meeting attender such as myself? The thing is, whenever I tell my wife I am going to grow something, she always tells me no, that she likes me shaven(doesn't scratch her as much, so she says). I really would like to grow one someday just so I could SEE what I would look like with one. In the past when I did start to grow a goatee(about 3 days, grows fast on me!), my wife got all pissed and threw a tantrum for me to shave it off.

Screw it, I might just do it for the hell of it to see what kind of response I get at the hall. I would like to hear firsthand the 'scriptural' reasons the elders would give me to shave it off. But then again, its not like I have any 'priviledges' to be taken away anyways...

Hmm...very interesting...frankly beards ARE scratchy! Jourles your wife has a valid complaint. I dig a guy in a goatee but mustaches and beards...ehhh not my style.

Ok so how come several of the men in my hall got to have mustaches? I can think of 5 off the top of my head when I was growing up that had them. Hairy lips are ok, but not the chin? Hmm come to think of it, three of them have been shaved....but the other two still have them. However, they aren't Elders...maybe it's a chain of comand deal. You can't get a promotion until you shave?

Don't you think the Dubs should go in on a merger with Gillette? Think about it...if Disney and McDonalds can do it, why not the society and Gillette? The dubs could promise exclusive marketing to 'hovahs. They could even set up billboards in the parking lots and get some money from them. Perhaps a sample pack of the shaving gel could accompany the watchtower and awake...conglomerations are a beautiful thing...I can't believe no one has jumped on this...
