In the early 90's our District Overseer, who was a self-proclaimed "company man", counseled our Circuit Assembly audience about how we spend our vacations. He talked about families spending hundreds of dollars (more like thousands) going to Disneyland or Disney World, but never going to tour Bethel. Then he boomed out "Don't go to the MOUSE; go to the HOUSE". After that, we heard that visits to Bethel increased dramatically. I know our family went later that year. (Disney World was a lot better) Yikes, he was an awful man. I am beginning to get more memories of this jerk, and his "encouraging" counsel to me, after my student talk on the Circuit Assembly that year. I was embarrassed and had to sit there smiling. I told him afterwards that I didn't appreciate it too, and he just grinned at me, like he had really pulled one off, and said "I knew you could take it". (he was wrong) It turns out he was sort of kidding me, because I DIDN'T need that particular point of counsel. But 850 other people didn't know that. Our circuit overseer, and another CO visiting, told me they didn't agree with the counsel. The damage was done, and I continued to think he was a jerk until he was reassigned finally. Good riddance.
