Comming from someone who has everything they need or want materially (except a Lamborghini Murceilago but I'm working on that) I'll try to help you some.

My GF got me pagama bottoms because the CK ones I had had a major rip in them. They weren't CK but I love 'em and am even wearing them as I'm posting now. Tooth paste because I was out. A CD player because I was too lazy to go get one.

Ideas for a present?

Movie passes are always nice and cheap. A CD or DVD or a gift certificate to a place that sells them so he can pick out his own. Some lingerie with a note, "you can see me in this tonight". (might not want to open that one in front of the kids if you have any Colongne you like. A "Coupon" for his favorite dinner made by you. Subscription to PlayBoy (errmmmm, ok maybe that one isn't that good). FAO Schwarz has cool stuff. Satellite (Direct TV) service would blow him away if you don't have that.

A friend of mine recently had the Big 40 birthday and he quietly made his birthday wish list known by dropping unsubtle hints about what he needed, wanted, desperately lacked, etc. All of it computer related, which was fine, everybody needs a hobby.

I'd been over to his place many times, and his system is quite impressive, but I noticed that he had done what most men will do, forgotten to make room for himself among his gadgets and possessions. There, among his expensive equipment and careful cable routing he sat perched on a threadbare, hard as rock, dilapitated little cast off bank tellers chair which he had retrieved from a dumpster back when he was eating Kraft Dinner, learning ASCII, and earning money changing ink rolls on Pitney Bowes postage meters.

If your hubby spends a lot of time in the well equipped garage or workshop, look around for examples of where he has forgotten to include himself among his prized possessions.

Examples:

He is out there listening to a tinny sounding radio with a wire coat-hanger antennae and a vise-grip tool permanently serving as a tuner control.

The workshop lacks a refrigerator.

He keeps a large piece of cardboard on hand to do: Anything. There is a piece of equipment out there that will do it better.

He has to leave the workshop to answer a phone call.

I think you get the idea.

Go to x10.com and get some home automation stuff. Yes, they're the same company that has all those annoying pop up ads for video cameras but they've been around a LOT longer than that. You can buy special light switches and thermostats and the needed transmitters to be able to make all the lights and appliances in your house remote controlled. There are hand held remotes that you can use as well as an interface for your PC. I was able to get all the needed pieces to turn a 2 bedroom house fully automated. You can really impress your friends with that stuff too.

The idea for the Legos kits was good also. I don't know if your hubby collects anything but if so ask him if there's anything in paticular he's been wanting.

Edited to add you can pick up small black and white TV's that could be kept out in the workshop for about $30 at the nearest Target or K-Mart. What's really cool is that not only do they work on battery power and can be plugged into the wall they also come adapters so you can watch them in the car.

Some pretty good ideas so far...

Men love to cook, especially if it is OUTDOORS and it involves DANGER.

This means a TURKEY FRYING KIT. A BIG propane burner that sounds like a jet engine and five gallons of boiling oil! Cook a 15 pound turkey in 30 minutes - I kid you not!
