  I guess one could ask any Methodist or Pentecostalist or Presbyterian or Lutheran or Catholic or Congregationalist theologian or scholar one would, and getthe same reply, that it is "dishonest, fraudulent" etc., and that "all competent scholar" have the same opinion, and that any diasagreeing scholas is only doing so because he is uninformed or paid by the WBTC.

  Of course they reply like that, they have their theological standpoint, they have their bias just as other groups have theirs.

  But once a scholar in classical languages without anytheological bias responds and does so not 100 % in accordance with the others, wow! are we getting angry! It seems he is disrupting the 100 % black-and-white-image we have established, and we don't want any of that sort hanging around here, do we?

  I like what this guy said. Many of us are guilty of doing this very thing. (See below)

  Alan F , I enjoyed that explanation. Some obviously view their Bible "translations" very seriously. Which translation do you think is most accurate?

  I apologize for hurting your feelings. Nevertheless, you still have not taken the bull by the horns and posted a coherent response. Try doing that, and you'll get a rather different response from me.

  You have no idea how much damage bad argumentation does to the cause of ex-JWs. A typical JW-defender will pounce on every bad bit of argumentation and use it to dismiss every good piece of argumentation he doesn't like. Onacruse, I have entirely lost my patience with people who ought to know better.

  Minimus, I like the NASB very much for its literalism. I also like the NWT for the same reason. I don't know that there is any "best" literal translation out there. Of course, I never take the word of any translation on its own, but whenever there is a question I refer to any number of scholarly sources. That said, I often find these ultra-literal translations next to useless to get real understanding of certain passages, since the original language sometimes contains idiom that translates unintelligibly word for word. I particularly like The New Jerusalem Bible since it retains good accuracy but also renders idioms thought for thought in an understandable manner. I also like The New Living Translation for intelligibility, but find that it sometimes sacrifices accuracy for smooth reading.

  Alan F, I have over 100 Bible versions and translations. Some are more literal than others. I've always felt that aside from some doctrinal bias the NWT isn't a bad Bible....I've seen plenty worse!

  I assume those of you who are NON BELIEVERS, and are stating which Bibles you like the best....are speaking from the viewpoint..."if I were a Christian and believed the bible...this is the one I'd choose".

  If you believe the Bible is bogus....how can you even say which one is the best?

  I don't believe "the Bible is bogus" -- I merely disbelieve a large fraction of what it says. One does not have to "believe" in something in order to understand and analyze it.

  I like the NASB it was the main bible they used when I attended the Masters College. http://www.masters.edu

  But my favorite is the NKJV. Both NKJV and NASB are very good formal equivelent translations.

  What is everyones opinion on the ESV English Standard Translation? I first ran into this bible back in March when I was checking out John McArthur's Shepherds Confrence at Grace Community Chutch on Rosco Blvd in the San Fernando Valley.

  Alan F, what is your take on dynamic equivelance?

  I also like to read the NIV and NRSV too.
