Is Travelling Good For The Soul?

Just a few days now, and her Ladyship and I will be off on our travels abroad again. I've lost count of the number of countries that we have visited, although I do still want to travel to OZ at sometime.

As we have got older, and more free, we seem to journey abroad more often. What I hadn't expected was the effect that travelling to other countries has on one's personality. Seeing all our long held customs being counted as nothing in another country can be quite nerve wracking, yet, ultimately, the experience becomes very fulfilling as we leave all of our preconceptions behind and accept those of our host country.

In a way, it's a similar experience to leaving the JW's, if you like it's almost a leap of faith the very first time you leave your homeland. The results though are so enriching, so mind-broadening, so different to what we have become used to.

So, I wonder, is travel abroad an essential part of a persons growth? Can you remain in your homeland for all time and still be open to new ideas and suggestions?

If this thread runs, and others state how travelling to foreign lands has changed them, I will throw in my fourpennyworth too.

I have traveled mostly in the US. My only trip out of the country has been to my birthplace, the Rep. of Panama. I was three-years-old when I left and went back for the first time to meet my dad several years ago. It was a wonderful experience, meeting my family there. I just about kissed the ground when I got off the plane, I had come home. Although it's a third-world country, it is extremely beautiful and friendly. My dad has a dairy near Volcan, very close to the Costa Rican border. I became a Panamanian.

Hopefully, I will travel to other countries one day. Good for the soul? I think learning about other places definitely enriches you.

    Hi Englishman,

I love to travel and I believe it has changed my outlook especially reguarding my own country. I appreciate living here more but I also see that in other countries its safer , not as much crime, and people are more laid back. I think my favorite country is Germany. Other than Italy, I haven't been anywhere that I didn't like. I found the Itallians to be quite rude and I believe I make much better spaghettii! !!!! I've been to England and I enjoyed the pubs VERY much!!!! I also loved the pasties. Its a great learning experience and its fun to visit with locals. In one pub ,in Tintangle, we played trivia and that was FUN.

Im really disappointed English that you didnt wait until the new system so that you could go abroad on horseback and learn to paint and play the violin and eat from that annoying cornucopia in your front yard like the REST OF US. Thats it...Im taking your house when God zaps you.

AND YOUR LITTLE DOG TOOOOO!!! ::::wicked witchy laugh ensues:::::

Is Travelling Good For The Soul?

    YES! YES! YES!

So much to learn about the rest of the world. Recently I've even begun to think that the "good guys" are really the "bad guys". That's cryptic, ain't it! I think Eman will understand.

The thing is, we found that our view of things had been shaped by the Borg, and after leaving, then our viewpoints also started to change.

The same is true in travelling. It can re-shape our viewpoints. Wonderful!

    Cheers and bon voyage, Mike.

My husband and I have travelled (and lived) to many places. I personally feel it is very important. I have learned so much about the world, how it works, and how it thinks, since leaving the US permanently. I feel so much better for it.

Eman...we were in Oz for almost a month. We didn't get to travel around the country (my husband was working), but Melbourne and Sydney were lovely.

After a while, we got sick of travelling. We still like the trips and what we can learn, but we really get tired of restaurant food.

    YES!

I can't imagine my soul being confined to one location.

There is so much to learn and experience in life, why limit it?

The letters 'PVC' stand for Poly Vinyl Chloride which is a chemical compound of chlorine, carbon and hydrogen.

The components of PVC originate from the naturally occurring raw materials of petroleum, or natural gas and common salt. The 'u' stands for Unplasticised, (sometimes called Unmodified), and it means that the material has not been softened by the addition of chemicals known as plasticisers.

    Eman and Your Ladyship:

I will be expecting my invitation. Please note that I like my potato salad without mayonnaise. Also, I will have to bring one or more of my children with me.

Is it possible that we will be able to sleep at your house overnight? I hope so?

Also, just for the record I like my breakfast in bed and I don't clean up after myself.
