Thanks for all of your replies!

I didn't know Split Enz were Aussies. I still remember the video for "One Step Ahead" - good song, back from the old, old days of MTV, when it was worth watching.

The "Vegemite sandwich" line from "Land Down Under" went straight over Americans' heads. I didn't know what Vegemite was until recently. They were interviewing a Columbus Crew (soccer) player on the local news. He had come over from Oz to play here. They asked him straight out - "what in the world is Vegemite?" He explained that it is a popular sandwich spread in Oz. What is it like? Is it like peanut butter or something?

    Dan:

Split Enz are NOT Aussies, they are New Zealanders anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar.

For all the facts on Vegimite see this thread:

Good old Split Enz...Six Months in a Leaky Boat LOL - I never did like them much even if they were from Te Awamutu. But Crowded House, yeah I like them.

Vegemite isn't much to rave about Dan...its black like molasses...but it tastes kinda salty. Its supposed to be good for you, we have it on our toste in the morning with a hot cup of tea. Its not my thing really...yet we always seem to go through a jar like its going out of fashion. I think the kids like it because its a change from the usual sweet spreads like jam etc. But then again, my kids will eat anything.

As for Aussie music, Dan, check out Graeme Connors. He's just released his new CD, but if you get a chance to download a song of his called "Let the cane fields burn" you won't be sorry.

Just some useless information for ya.

Thanks Beck, I'll check out the chap you mentioned.

I had some JW friends who visited Australia once. They told me about a lot of the cultural differences that they found amusing, such as "smash repair" for a body shop, "sloppy joe" for a sweater, "Bob's Your Uncle" means everything is OK, there were others but I've forgotten them.

By the way Beck, you're my JW.com crush. Your posts make me laugh so much! If you ever decide to leave Oz and come to Ohio, I'm here for ya babe!

Great big wet coming your way Dan LOL. Ya just made my day, how 'bout that! Now I'm gonna start dreaming about Ohio LOL.

Smash Repair shops are also called Panel Beaters as well. Over here the Body Shop is a franchise of shops that sell scented soaps and body cream LOL.

Sloppy Joe, Jumper, Jersey (NZ), sweat shirt or windcheater = sweater. Just call it a top and you can't go wrong LOL.

Bob's Your Uncle is the same as:
    she'll be right mate
No Worries (I hear this one all the time)
    Too Easy

To read those sentences is much different to how it is said...there's this whiney nasally tone that goes with it hehe.

My favourite is 'Turn it up mate'. First time I heard that, I went and turned up the telly (TV). It is actually said like a question but it means "gimme a break would ya" It can also mean "you don't know shit from clay mate" which is what Stephanus is going to say to me when he reads this LOL.

Back in Bygone days of youth I used to go watch AC/DC at the pub down the road. Used to cost about 5 dollars and depending how early you were you could get right up the front. Course, that was before Bon Scott died. I used to watch The Angels a lot too. They were a great band, but they hit the bigtime a bit too early and didnt make it overseas as megastars.

Hey RF, you sure are Andy's vintage LOL...he likes the Angels and he used to go to the local to watch ACDC in his bygone days also....same vintage alright It was before my time of course *cough*

Phil Rudd, the drummer of the mighty rock group, lives in NZ and has done so for some time, Beck, he lives in Paradise Valley

G'day Downunder, yes I knew he was in Rotos....I used to go to school with his girlfriend (not sure if she is still his girlfriend) a girl by the name of Michelle Cutelli - she was the dumbest girl in school but the prettiest....I guess he wasn't into brainy chicks, that's prolly why he overlooked us, oh and the fact we were dubbies

avishai - some other good Aussie artists are Men at Work, John Farnham, Killing Heidi, Stevie Wright (no relation) and Jimmy Barnes. There are more but I can't think of them right now. And not to be confused, Split Enz, Crowded House, Dragon and Mi Sex were kiwi groups
