At some point in one's exit process from the borg, I'd recommend reading Orwell's 1984. It will help you to see that a lot of the things we thought were so unique about the Witnesses are nothing more than standard, old-fashioned, totalitarian tactics.

I read the NWT 8 times before I left the jws, A Paduan.

I read 1984 a couple of years before I left. Ugh, my brain was so atrophied by that time that I didn't see many of the obvious parallels. Except the last paragraph stuck with me for some reason:

He gazed up at the enormous face. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark moustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.

I spent so many years in the org trying to "get it right". I kept waiting for the day when my deep feelings of unease about JWism would go away, and I would "gain the victory over myself" and become a real, bonafide JW, fearlessly proclaiming the message far and wide. Kinda like Winston's final mindless surrender to Big Bro. That parallel wasn't lost on me.
