The "faked email" excuse for stupidity

I think that Simon is referring to a situation where someone sends appallingly untruthful emails to a fellow poster, gets rumbled, and then pretends it was someone else impersonating them.

Personally, I'd rather have a Baby grand than a granbabby anyway.

I'll get a certificate and give it a try and let you know how to do it.

I'll also look at adding a link to all emails sent from this site that can be used to confirm that they are authentic. Whatever everyone else decides to do or not to do, I plan on making it obvious whether emails have really come from me or not.

I know there will be some nay-sayers who will still be against this sort of security even though it proves beyond any doubt whether an email is genuine or not. I can only guess that it would put an end to any of their claims of "it wasn't me, it was the virus" if it catches on.

Farkel, yes the from line can be spoofed easily, however, if you examine the header, you will see where the e-mail was orignally sent from, at least the ip address of the person, that is not easily spoofed.

Then get yourself a decent email client that can use secure certificates !

BTW: They give the example of Outlook / Outlook Express because it's the most well known but I don't think the certificate is tied to it per-se. You just need to look at the details for your particular email client. If it doesn't support secure email then I suggest you drop it and find a better one.

Actually my client does support it, it's not a matter of the client not supporting is simon, but they're website is not friendly to anything but Internet Explorer, so you have to install it on IE, then export it from IE, I did this, I now have a certificate on netscape e-mail. If anyone would like info on how to export it from IE and Into netscape let me know. Must be sad, being stuck in a box.
