    Hi everyone,

I took my daughter to go see the New Harry Potter movie yesterday. We bought the tickets last week on fandango.com.

How many of you guys have watched it? What was your favorite scene? Did you prefer the 1st. movie? My daughter loved it.

I actually picked her up 1 hour early from school. We saw the 3:20 matinee.

    She was so Happy.

PS. How many have read all the 4 books? How far along are you in the books? Please rate/or give your opinion on the books vs. the movie.

I thought it was pretty good.... It seemed a little long, and the ending was like being force fed a bunch of Pixie Stix, but some of it was downright creepy scary, and my kids jumped at all the right moments. I haven't read the books yet, but I'm sure they are chock full of scary thrills too.

Now, The Two Towers, THAT's the one I'm drooling for. Just watched the expanded DVD version, and I couldn't believe how a sprinkling of 30 extra minutes here and there made a great movie even BETTER! Watch that one, if you are able. All those hardcore Tolkienites who groused about so much being left out might like it (except that Tom Bombadil bunch).

We went to see HP2 last night as well- We loved it! I have read all of the books that are out and am waiting on the next one :)

I also love the LOTR's although I have not read the books yet. I am waiting on twin towers as well and did not know that there was an extended version out on dvd.

CaptainSchmideo, my daughter and I read all of the first book and we are only 1/2 way with the 2nd book.

How old are your kids? My daughter is 9 and I jumped more than her.

Anyavnclv, I don't think I've heard of the Lotr's or the Two Towers. Are they geared toward kids or adults?

LOTR is the abbreviation for Lord of the Rings, considered by many to be the Grandfather of what we know as the Quest Epic. It is a three volume book, the centerpiece for the mythology of Middle Earth, the world created by Oxford Linguist JRR Tolkien. The plot is centered on the task of taking an ancient ring of Evil power back to where it was forged, and destroying it. Way too simplified, but it's late, and I don't feel like typing too much. It's a world populated by Elves, Wizards, Dwarves, Goblins, and Men. Oh, and by Hobbits...

If you are aware of the game Dungeons and Dragons, then realize that the game owes a lot to this set of books.

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first book of LOTR. It was released as a movie last December. Part two, The Two Towers, is due to be released on December 18. The Return of the King will be released in December 2003.

This is a good story for mature kids, one that can follow a story, aren't too impressionable, and aren't too afraid of some dark violence. This is an epic, and there is hand to hand sword fighting, arrows shooting, etc. The film makers have treated this as a labor of love, and it shows. The actors take it seriously, but with a real warmth and humor sprinkled within it. The hands down favorite character is Gandalf the wizard, played by Ian McKellen. He anchors the entire film, and if he was acted in the same manner that Richard Harris plays Griffendore in HP, then this movie would not work.

The Fellowship is available on DVD now. Watch it now, and then you'll only have to wait a month to see the next chapter. The rest of us have had to wait a year!

Yeah, at Costco I've seen the books for sale. It sounds very interesting. I'll have to go and buy the DVD before the movie comes out.

    Thank you for the details,

    Hi :o)

Am in the UK and managed to see the preview of HP on 8th November in London. I think it was better than HP and the Philosopher's Stone - and all those who were with us felt the same. Erm... have read all 4 published books, buying several copies on the first publication date of each so that all members of the family can read them independently and there's no arguing ;o)

The Lord of the Rings is a phenomenon in its own right in the UK. J R R Tolkien, the author, was on the translation team of the Jerusalem Bible (he was Roman Catholic).

Reading The Hobbit will set the scene for The Lord of the Rings. The Silmarillion was the prequel to TLOTR, but is best read afterwards imo.

The film is long and although rated as a PG in the UK, some youngsters may find the darker scenes quite frightening, so it might be worth watching first and then deciding on its suitability for younger viewers. Those youngsters familiar with the books will know what to expect to a certain extent. There were a few children of 5 or 6 in the cinema when we saw The Fellowship of the Ring and they seemed to cope with the film, but over here there are some families who bring up their children on Tolkien novels, reading them to youngsters in the same way as they might read Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty to them - even though the content is worlds apart - pardon the pun!

You can view a trailer for The Two Towers on the net and you'll find a number of TLOTR sites there too.

    Hope this helps :o)

    Hi everyone,

I hope that you don't think I am boasting here, but my son, worked as an animator on the new Harry Potter film, and he will be starting on the next one in the spring. Just a proud mum :)

    Christian O,

Thanks for the update. I'll watch it without my 9 year old daughter. She liked HP but the LOTR might be too much for her. Tolkien sounds like a very interesting person to have worked on translating one of the bible's.

    Twinkletoes,

No, it's not bragging. I would do the same thing if it was my son. How exciting. I loved the special effects. I like the pictures moving & how the candles float when they are having dinner. The invisible cloak is also pretty neat. The mandrakes were pretty ugly squirmy things. The crashing Owl is funny too; poor little owl. How long has he done special effects? I heard that there is going to be a new producer for the 3rd movie. I think it's some latin man. I heard it on entertainment news about a month ago.
