Some Interesting Thoughts From Mark Twain

P>I'm reading them the short story "How I Edited An Agricultural Paper," which I'm going to tie in with writing about what you know from your life experiences (Twain was a master ). I'm also going to talk to them about the fact that truth in journalism is not often absolute. Stories can be entirely altered in the editing room. I also want to point out an observation made by a journalism instructor at my college, who used to be an associated press reporter. He said that the public often does not want to hear the unvarnished truth-they want sensationalism. Sort of like this story:)

You are way ahead of me in your training. I'm only in my second semester of school. I'm going to be a secondary English teacher if everything works out.I'm doing my introduction to teaching course now. Our instructor believes in hands-on training, so we have to write and present a lesson plan, then make any changes we feel are necessary after we teach it.This lesson is for a college prep comp class.

Where I live, you have to complete ninety hours of field work (at least forty-five have to be classroom hours) before you can even apply for the school of education. I've almost completed the first forty-five. My neice's teacher has asked me if I will consider helping out in her class also, so I should have no problem reaching my requirement. I hope to continue to volunteer until I graduate. I enjoy it alot.

I'm familiar with teaching a bit because I home schooled my children for a number of years (it was their choice-I did not force them).I know about different learning styles and a little about lesson planning, although the higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy confused me (I'll get better with practice,I'm sure).

I love writing, and in fact am trying to break into print myself with some encouragement from my college instructors. I am really saddened by the lack of interest in books by the majority of today's kids (that's why series like Harry Potter, Animorphs, and American Chillers have my approval--they get kids to ENJOY reading).I think Mark Twain said it well when he wrote "The man who chooses not to read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them."

What level do you plan to teach?

Thanks for inquiring--it's nice to meet another future educator:)
