Some brief reiteration: Firstly, Marx preached that the workers revolution that would herald Utopia would occur in Europe. The French prepare the way, The Germans commence it, The English finish it. The workers of the world reap the benefit.

Secondly: Marx preached that the revolution followed on from a Capitalist state of things. Without progressing thru the state of Capitalism and exhausting it, there could be no "Proletarian Dictatorship" . It was like trying to put a roof on a house before the walls were erected.

Thirdly: After the revolution the State as an institution must "wither" .Fading away. Why this "withering " must occur was never clearly developed by Marx, but all Marxists believed it must occur.

The vast majority of the discussion henceforth will revolve around these key issues, not because they have been chosen by myself as key issues. These are the issues continually discussed in Marxist debate after the occurence of the Revolution of 1917.

    .....................................................................

PART 3 - THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE APPLICATION OF MARXIST DOCTRINE TO REALITY .

The revolution occured in 1917. The next decade was one of total upheaval. Up until the commencement of the revolution, Lenin believed that for a revolution to succeed it must follow the Dialectical pattern established by Marx. CAPITALISM/ Dictatorship of the Proletariat/ Socialism. He believed the Capitalist phase must be journeyed through. But with 1917 and events unfolding he seized the opportunity to grasp power despite the fact that Russia had never been "capitalist" and "industrial" .As the revolution got underway Lenin started to preach that the revolution could succeed if The Russian workers uprising triggered sympathetic revolutions in other countries that were industrialized.

In March 1917 Lenin stated: "The absolute truth is that without a revolution on Germany, we will perish".

And on 23 April 1918: " Our backwardness has thrust us forwardand we shall perish unless we are able to hold out until we meet with the mighty support of other countries".

This is what was expected to happen. The workers of other countries would join in the revolution as they saw the example set by Russian workers. The experienced workers of the western world would rally to then, once the revolution was over, assist their Russian brothers to overcome the fact that Russia had not traversed the Capitalist phase.

In 1917,1918 there seemed good indications that this uprising of the working class of Europe could indeed happen. As R N Carew Hunt puts it in "The theory and Practise of Communism" :....." It was possible to argue in 1917 that revolutionary prospects in the West were favourable.....since the latter stages of the war had led to disaffection among the working class of many of the antagonistic nations."

Hunt continues: " However, the 5th comintern congress of 1924 was obliged to recognize that the tide had ebbed and that capitalism had restabilized".

THe expectation of the World revolution failed to materialize. Events (as the 1920s began and advanced)continually disconfirmed that it was imminent. The fact was, in reality, there was no world wide union of "workers" there were only seperate nations. And none of the industrialized nations wanted a "proletarian revolution" . This was clearly demonstrated in the first post war election in Germany when the people elected a democratic moderate government by an overwhelming majority. The expectation of the "World wide revolution" was totally disconfirmed by the evidence of reality.

    ..................................................................

What of the "Withering of the state" and the "Administration of things" by the working class after the revolution?

Note that Lenin said in "State and Revolution" (1918) : "The proletariat needs a state, that is what the opportunists tell you. But the proletariat needs only a Dying State. That is, a state organized in such a way that it immediately begins to wither away and cannot help withering away".

Lenin laid out various plans as to how the "Withering state" and the "Administration of things" would be organized post revolution. He had to lay this blueprint out, because Marx never did. Nowhere in Marx is it laid out how the utopia will be organized once the evil old order is destroyed!!

Some of Lenins notions are quoted from "State and Revolution" and "How to organize competition":

..."Officialdom is a parasite upon the body of Society.... a parasite stopping up the living pores....the proletariat will shatter the the old beaurocratic machine and create its own apparatus out of employees and workers. It will take measures against THESE turning into beaurocrats.Measures analized in detail by Marx and Engels: 1) Election to positions and recall at any time. 2) payment no higher than the wages of a worker. 3) immediate transition to a regime in which all will fullfill the roles of control and supervision, all shall, in rotation, be beuarocrats". (state and Revolution, 1918)

..."We must break the old, absurd, savage an despicable prejudice that only the rich and educated can administer the state, since every rank and file worker who can read and write can do this organizational work".

Certainly a rather naive view of things. The consequences?

Within three years of the revolution the country was levelled to absolute prostration. Total financial disaster. Civil war. And no world wide workers revolution in sight. By the 9th congress, of the year 1920 Lenin was compelled to announce : ...." For the work of organizing the state we need people who have state and business experience and there is nowhere we can turn for these people except the old class....We have to administer things with the help of the class which we have overthrown".

Trotsky, in "The Revolution Betrayed" paints the picture circa the early 20s:......" The city demanded grain and raw materials from the rural regions giving nothing in return...and the farmer buried his stores under the ground. The government sent worker detatchments to obtain the grain, and the farmer cut down his crops".

Further: ...." For 1921 The production of steel fell from 4.2 million tons to 183,000 tons....In 1922 the total harvest of grain fell from 801 million hundredweight to 503 million hundredweight....the country, and the government with it, stood on the very edge of the abyss."

The final part of this brief history will be posted next.......

    Part 4.

In the depths of this time of failed expectations abounding, the economy in ruins and the hopes for Utopia receeding. Lenin Died. One is tempted to say he died of the "disappointment' that Some speculate Russell and The Adventist founder, Miller, died of. Regardless, he died. And the inevitable power stuggle commenced. A man called Trotsky was Lenins appointed successor. He carried the Mantle. But Trotsky told the people things they didnt want to hear. His position was that the revolution was in crisis because there had been no revolution in Europe. The cycle of history espoused by Marx had been broken. At all costs revolution in Europe must be forced to occur before Russia could be saved. Others felt that the revolution was in trouble because Russia had not been thru the phase of Capitalism, and so at all costs capitalist like mass manufacture must be generated. The people were afraid, and wanted only tranquility. They wanted their bread and tea. Here is where Stalin comes in. He told the masses what they wanted to hear.

Stalin generated a theory called "Socialism in one Country" ,and pushed it in the media. Russia would drive at mass manufacture so as to go through the processes of capitalist production, and a consistent plan was outlined for fomenting "Revolution" in other countries and exporting "Socialism". Stalin reassured the people that they could, and WERE building a perfect Socialist society without going thru the Capitalist phase. The masses were relieved. Actually, Socialism had become a dirty word, it was tainted with failure, so a new phase of the "dialectic" was revealed. Instead of "Capitalism/ Dictatorship of the proles/ Socialism" it became "Dictatorship of the proles/ Socialism/ Communism" . Its something akin to the expected apocalypse of 1914 becoming the return of Christ invisibly. The Apocalypse is shifted future.Prophecy can only be understood after it is fullfilled. Yet this is no failed prophecy, magnificent events are still occuring right on time. It was declared that Socialism had been attained! But Utopia was now ANOTHER step ahead, in the COMMUNISM phase. Stalin convinced all the doubters, all the frightened ones, all the waverers, that Russia was strong enough to generate World socialism without assistance from outside revolutions.

Of course, Stalin, down the years said a lot of things, for example:

"it is not possible to organize socialist production and achieve the final victory of socialism, without revolutions in several advanced countries". ("Problems of Leninism"- J Stalin)

But that statement later contradicted the new doctrine of "socialism in One Country" and so the book was recovered from circulation and the paragraphs altered to fit later interpretations of scripture.

In 1939 at the 18th congress Stalin was obliged to explain why "the State had not Withered away". A good question in view of the fact that the state was supposed to disappear with the attainment of Socialism. And Stalin had already claimed Socialism was achieved.

He said: "When Engles spoke of the 'withering of the state',it was on the assumption that socialism had already been attained in the western countries, or the majority of them..... and as long as Russia is surrounded by hostile capitalist countries the power of the state must not decrease, rather it must increase".

And so socialism was attained in Russia but the state could not wither until the world wide revolution was achieved.

But then, (according to uncle Joe) the Russian "state" was "not really a 'state' in the terms Engels meant a 'state' ". After all, the Russian Socialist state was not run by the rich fat cats and professional politicians of the Western nations. No. The Russian state was run by the Workers in the form of the "soviets" and so the Russian state was a state "of a kind unforseen by Marx and Engels"

But was the party really run by the workers?

I quote from R N Carew hunts "Theory and practise":

...." At the 14th congress in 1925, 56.8 percent of the delegates were classified as workers. At the 17th congress in 1934 'workers from production' had fallen to 9.3 percent. At the 18th congress of 1939, percentages, for the first time, were not given".

Further. "The 17th congress laid down that the central committee should be elected not less than once every 3 years, but the 18th congress did not meet till 1939, and the 19th congress was deferred until 1952".

Up until 1928 local wards had been organized with the local worker members electing their own representatives. But at that time there was a "restructuring":. Carew Hunt says:

" The lower bodies lost the right to choose their leaders, who were now appointed by the higher party organs."

The members of the committees became those who were the nominees of Moscow . The organization became run from the top down.

Why do people in the USA argue about such foolish things as how Communism is so awful and the Jews are supposedly so priveledged still in Russia?

How about arguing on topics that actually have to do with we folks in the USA and UK, like why people like G.W. Bush and his Corporate SS Cronies are allowed to continue to destroy not only the planet earth and our air, water, and trees, but also are allowed to systematically destroy what is left of the individual freemdoms and liberties suppposedly promised all Americans? Also why not argue about how fabulous this whole "Capitalistic" utopia has been working out for anyone middle class on down for the past 40 years or so, huh?

In case your rose-colored USA patriotic designer sunglasses should have you blind to the above, take them off awhile, watch the people around you, ALL people, even the ones in card board boxes, also try taking a look see at the stock market and biz. reports. Paying special attention to what the BUSHES own stock in and what all has been making a BIG Profit since 9-11!!! Now, that ought to get those poor frozen brain cells to workin'!

oh, and if anyone has the sadly worn out & pathetic comeback "america, love it or leave" do not bother, if anyone should leave it it should be anyone that would be stupid enough to think of something like that as a comeback for what has been pointed out in this post above, for obviously such a lame brain is not helping to make this county any better!

Why do people in the USA argue about such foolish things

Interesting observation but doesnt it still take at least 2 to qualify as an argument?

    Perhaps you will consider this

To consider topics such as this, "foolish things" would be, in the opinion of many, to stick ones head in the sand. Cause and effect does not have boundaries. Unless of course you live on Gilligans Island.

Are we arguing are we plum?? Could have fooled me. I thought I was trying to point out some things about Russia that, hopefully, ex dubs might relate to and see were familiar patterns. Okay...I know I did a pretty ordinary job of constructing the thread. Pretty complex subject though, little understood, unless you are a communist.

I (for one) am very interested in the subject that you have brought up. Particularly the familiar patterns that you mention.

Please keep it up, I am learning something.
