How many meetings a week, do you think we should have had in order to be reasonable and not overdone? Maybe 30 or 40 years ago, when woman didnt work, or when life was a little easier, that all these meetings every 2 days was ok, but today with life being so stressful, and with all the time it takes commuting, is it normal to still have so many meetings. Nothing changed in the last 50 years as far as meetings go. The Watchtower didnt adjust to modern times. With the 15 minute a month field service report change, maybe the society could also ask less in meeting hours per week. Maybe its time that they take off 1 or 2 meetings a week. I think that many are overwhelmed with all these meetings every 2 days. Maybe thats why attendance is so low. Less people would quit if positive changes occurred. Do you think the Watchtower will ever be less demanding?
Was it normal to have so many meetings?

Once a week, but the brain programming of more dubs would slip.

In this "time of the end"(TM), I'm surprised they don't look to have more meetings...maybe 8 day DC's will come back...

Many meetings, much studying, much field service is a standard mind control tactic.
The tactic is to keep members so busy they don't have time to think and evaluate whether anything makes sense. Combined with very repititous material, the mind just stops thinking and accepts what it is told.
Combined with full time jobs and families and a home to look after, JWs have no time to take a breather. This means they don't have time to evaluate or critically examine what they are studying. It is much simpler just to accept. This allows a high level of control over members.

JH,
I just finished reading CoC so it is fresh in my mind. I agree with Franz's belief that the organization will never change in its core beliefs. And to cut back on the number of meetings is diametrically opposed to one of those core beliefs that insist that people constantly "do more", not less.
Franz points out time and time again how the GB blinds itself to its own cruel policies, and complaints by elders at Bethel or letters from the rank of file have done nothing to change these over the years. These men are drunk on the power they have over people's lives and are not there to be reasonable and loving.

No, it's not normal to have so many meetings. Although 4 of the meetings are incorporated into 2 different meeting sessions, having to remember to study for all that stuff got to be too much. I wasn't a JW then, but didn't some of the assembly days last 12-14 hours? Can someone confirm this please?

It is not normal to have so many meetings. Even other churches may have an OPTIONAL weekday bible study in someones home, but it is not a requirement. Think about it, between meetings, field service, and personal and family study time, there is no time for anything.

It's not easy believing crap.
Without continual reinforcement, the members would gradually normalize.
Can't have that.

But if their numbers could go up, with less meetings, wouldn't that be great for them!

I remember when I was a little girl, going to assemblies that started at 9:00 in the morning until 9:00 at night. They would break for lunch and for dinner. I also remember going to an 8 day assembly in Kansas City in 1969. How in the hell did my mother do it with 5 kids in tow?
