An interesting programme on TV mentioned something that I never knew:

In the 1800's London, the use of Laudanum was widespread. Laudanum was an opiate that had been imported from overseas.

A physician tried to create an alternative whithout the side effects but what he created, Morphine, proved to be addictive. At one stage, politicians were openly injecting Morphine while in the houses of parliment!

A chemist then tried to create a non-addictive version of morphine ... which became known as Heroin.

    Oh dear.

Interesting that some choose to claim that the 'war on drugs' has been lost and yet, compared to 100 years ago, the use of drugs is much less widespread and accepted.

My theory is drugs are like viruses. Those viruses which promptly kill their host don't live to survive and spread. Drugs that make life intolerable for the user or even kill simply can't become attractive or viable to other people.

Two other examples I can think of, probably common knowledge:

    1) Coca-Cola originally was provided as a syrup that you had to mix with your own "solvent," and actually had cocaine as an admixture;

    2) Not nearly as relevant, but: The Nazis included daily rations of methamphetamine for all their troops.

    Quite the pick-me-ups, eh?

That's exactly why you Brits fought the Opium Wars, to keep your little ol' ladies supplied with opium to put in their afternoon tea.

In fact Opium, Heroin, and Cocaine were all legal at the turn of the last century. You could purchase a really nice syringe with two needles and two hits of heroin from the Sears catalogue for $3.00 at the turn of the last century.

Dr. Asa Candler - pharmacist, and heroin addict, believed that cocaine would counteract heroin withdrawal, so he created a "tonic" that contained, among other things cocaine, caffene, carbonic acid, caramel, etc. He later sold this tonic to a Mr. Pemberton, and the rest is history, and no matter how much the Coca-Cola Company protests that its namesake drink never contained cocaine, they lie like a rug. It did. But it has no effect on heroin addiction or withdrawal.

The dark side of none of these powerful drugs was known at the time of their popular, and legal use at the turn of the last century. We in the west had no prior knowledge of these plant alkaloids and it required time and experience with them to discover that they were destroyers. My own great grandmother died a laudanum addict soon after the turn of the last century. That was a mixture of opium in alcohol and while the percentage varied, it packed a powerful wallop. Y'all see those movies several years ago about Wyatt Earp? Remember his weepy wife? Laudanum addict. Depressed all the time without her opium. Live and learn.

I suffer from insomnia from time to time and about a month ago at one in the morning, PBS put on an hour long presentation about these three drugs and their history in American and British societies. It was fascinating to say the least. So it was PBS that let the cat out of the bag about Coca-Cola.

Ahhh, "Mother's Little Helper" went a long way in keeping the ladies in line, quiet and easily manageable. We are on the all the products of an addicted society of human beings, and this goes way, way back. No wonder our genetic makeup is all askew.

Information is the key to knowledge.

Thanks for these facts, which I have found most interesting!

The jewish family, sassoon, was granted monopoly on the opium trade in china. Here is a quote:

David Sassoon was born in Baghdad, Iran in 1792, son of Saleh Sassoon, a wealthy banker and the treasurer to Ahmet Pasha, governor of Baghdad (making him the "court Jew" -- a highly influential position). When Ahmet was overthrown for corruption in 1829, the Sassoons fled to Bombay, India, the strategic trade route to India and gateway to the Far East. Soon the British government granted Sassoon "monopoly rights" to the manufacture of cotton goods, silk and most importantly, Opium -- at that time the most addictive drug in the world!

The Jewish Encyclopedia of 1905 , states that Sassoon expanded his opium trade into China and Japan. He placed his eight sons in charge of the major opium exchanges in China. According to the 1944 Jewish Encyclopedia: "He employed only Jews in his business, and wherever he sent them he built synagogues and schools for them. He imported whole families of fellow Jews . . . and put them to work." Sassoon's sons were busy pushing this mind-destroying drug in Canton, China. Between 1830 and 1831 they trafficked 18,956 chests of opium, earning millions of dollars. Part of the profits went to Queen Victoria and the British government. In the year 1836 the trade increased to over 30,000 chests and drug addiction became endemic in coastal cities.

From http://www.biblebelievers.org.au/sassoon.htm There is much about this if one searches.
