logical
yes
get rid of religion and get rid of a vast majority of evil.
if people went to God through Christ who leads them on the right path, instead of religion that takes them down to destruction, they would learn to love, forgive, have mercy, not to destroy those who are different.

At this time, i think it is. However, the way rome used christianity across europe served to speed up it's unification. Having done that job, i think it could be shed like an old moth eaten coat.
Logical, You funny.

Yes, but not as much today as in the past. Consider the middle ages- Galileo as an example. He had to retract his statements on the earth revolving around the sun, to save his life, from the religions of his day. I feel that if religion did not have the influence that it did in the past--- we would be hundreds of years more scientifically advanced than we are today. Live long and prosper....Spock

1. I guess it depends on what you mean by progress. I suppose it would eliminate MANY problems associated with religion.......such as hatred that effects many.
2. The middle east would not be fighting over land.......but would they progress?
3. Families would do better that are seperated over religious fanatics within the family.
Is it an outdated caveman notion?
It is a handown from ancient beliefs. The problems began when christians demanded AUTHORITY within it's ranks with a "you must believe this way" attitude.
This question however is like saying is "politics" hampering man?
Man will always want to worship something or look to the heavens, so the question is asking something that will never happen. Man will always need politics to live among each other also.

Religion seems to be part of our monkey genetics. Maybe we could reengineer our code to get rid of the need for it

Hey SS, how goes it?
I have not known any monkeys or seen any that have a WORSHIP aspect to their lives.Man is different in this respect. However I guess we don't know if animals think about something greater, since we can't talk to them and ask them........accept eve.....she could have asked the serpent some things. LOL

Religion has given us some pretty wild ass ART that is sci- fi!
People with wings and halo's including babies, torturous demons with wings tormenting other rebels, spooky pictures of God blowing huricanes out of his mouth. Yeah, without religion our art would be more limited.
(I don't know why in the hell I just thought of that comment )......I need more coffee

One of the biggest problems I see with religion, especially in the twenty-first century, is that it takes a system of beliefs and elevates it to a station of absolute truth and infallibility, to be reverenced and without question. Once an individual embraces any system of beliefs as such, they will all too often sacrifice logic and common sense upon it's alter. They no longer seek truth, they seek support for and validation of their religion. In that pursuit, real truths are distorted and information is manipulated to support and conform to their religion. I believe that, indeed, does hamper the progress of humanity. Any philosophy which restrains clear and free thought and objectivity is certainly outdated, in my opinion.
However, it is also my opinion that not every system of beliefs held in reverence is, what we commonly think of as, a religion. Many individuals who have embraced such theories as evolution or "the big bang", are just as closed-minded as any JW or Southern Baptist erver thought about being. Such interpretaions of the history of life on this earth can sometimes be just as blindly dogmatic as the ravings of a militant Islamic. Regardless of whether it relates to religion, science, the history of man or whatever, humanity needs an open mind and a willingness to recognize and correct error.
But, that's just me!
