It was 22 years ago tonight that John Lennon died, gunned down by an insane fan, Mark David Chapman. I was making brownies and my first husband was watching Monday Night Football. He called me to the living room and I heard Howard Cosell make the announcement. I stood there with a chocolate covered spatula in my hand, stunned. After all this time, I still miss him.

John, thank you for writing and recording the songs that touched my life. Your fingerprints remain on my soul.

    Love,

    Robyn

The only songwriter that I've ever cried for.

    Just "Imagine."

I remember how I felt when I heard about John Lennon. Whenever I hear "Empty Garden", it comes back to me. It's a combination of stunned disbelief and shocked outrage.

After all these years, his music is still as timeless as it has always been.

    "Imagine" indeed.

I was driving home from night class at the local Community College when I heard about it. Although 32 at the time, I was still shocked and saddened. I didn't necessarily agree with his politics, but admired his talents and have always enjoyed his music.

Along with "Imagine," don't forget "Beautiful Boy."

    These are from John:

Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue with that; I'm right and I will be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first -- rock and roll or Christianity. -- Evening Standard (London, 4 March 1966)
God is a concept by which we measure our pain.-- God(1970)
As soon as you're born, they make you feel small...-- Working Class Hero (1970)

    and finally

Imagine there's no heaven; it's easy if you try
No hell below us, above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today ...

Imagine there's no countries; it isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace...
    -- John Lennon, Imagine

I was in first grade and was not old enough to know who he was or to appriciate his work.

I discovered him later in life and he is now one of my favorite artists.

Here is a link to one of my favorite albums of his... Lennon Legend

this song still gives me chills every time i hear it.

    Imagine
    Imagine there's no heaven,
    It's easy if you try,
    No hell below us,
    Above us only sky,
    Imagine all the people
    living for today...

    Imagine there's no countries,
    It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
    No religion too,
    Imagine all the people
    living life in peace...

    Imagine no possesions,
    I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
    A brotherhood of man,
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

As soon as you're born, they make you feel small...

Donkey, thank you for reminding me of the song that contains the above lyrics. The song is Working Class Hero:

    Working Class Hero John Lennon

As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

    Love,

    Robyn

    Robbie,

I was working structural fabrication for U.S.Steel at the time, sitting in the bull pen waiting for my foreman to arrive and give us our field assignments for the midnight shift. When he entered, his face was pale and his eyes were noticeably over moist. He informed us of what had happened just a short while ago....... and a quiter more somber group of guys you'll never see. It's amazing; the degree to which we were all impacted by that man's death!

mac, of the feeling a little sad all over again class
