I must say you are right about one thing. And that is GOD WAS BOODTHIRSTY. Because thats what it took to satisfy his holiness, and thats what was provided on Calvary. BLOOD. But theres power in the BLOOD.

Thier "God" YHWH is a mythological God of War. Plain and simple.

I very much suspect that the Hebrews practiced human sacrifice at some point in their history.
Not sure about that assumpition, as I have no proof, but I speculate what the "virgins" were used for... whatever it was, the purpose was obviously with ill intent, regardless if it was rape or sacrafice. Either way, the slaughter and death toll of YHWH's "rightous people" makes me sick.

There are many accounts in the bible that I find troubling, and Amanda points some of them out.

How about the mess in Judges, when the woman was raped and abused by the Benjaminites, and the bloody carnage that followed. That's one more account that I always found disturbing.

Mr. Moe, yours is a very thought provoking thread. We can also include the book of Joshua, where Joshua and his army killed every man, woman, child, and all of their animals, in hundreds of towns in the land of Canaan. It took Joshua seven years, but he got the job done. Why yes it was the promised land for the Jews, but it was someone else's homeland. Joshua was far more deadly than either Hitler or Stalin, in terms of the percent they killed. Joshua killed 100%, exept for one whore who sold out her own people and was a spy for the enemy.

Jack -- Do you know where this account is? Do you mind posting it?

Larc - Good point. If 7 years of blooshed and slaughter at the hands of God isn't enough to make you wince, then I don't know what will. I mean, wow, what a loving merciful creator to kill you for having a different viewpoint.

    Judges
    Chapter 21

    1
1 Now the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah that none of them would give his daughter in marriage to anyone from Benjamin.
    2
So the people went to Bethel and remained there before God until evening, raising their voices in bitter lament.
    3
They said, "LORD, God of Israel, why has it come to pass in Israel that today one tribe of Israel should be lacking?"
    4
Early the next day the people built an altar there and offered holocausts and peace offerings.
    5
Then the Israelites asked, "Are there any among all the tribes of Israel who did not come up to the LORD for the assembly?" For they had taken a solemn oath that anyone who did not go up to the LORD at Mizpah should be put to death without fail.
    6
2 The Israelites were disconsolate over their brother Benjamin and said, "Today one of the tribes of Israel has been cut off.
    7
What can we do about wives for the survivors, since we have sworn by the LORD not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?"
    8
And when they asked whether anyone among the tribes of Israel had not come up to the LORD in Mizpah, they found that none of the men of Jabesh-gilead had come to the encampment for the assembly.
    9
A roll call of the army established that none of the inhabitants of that city were present.
    10
The community, therefore, sent twelve thousand warriors with orders to go to Jabesh-gilead and put those who lived there to the sword, including the women and children.
    11
3 They were told to include under the ban all males and every woman who was not still a virgin.
    12
Finding among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, who had had no relations with men, they brought them to the camp at Shiloh in the land of Canaan.
    13
Then the whole community sent a message to the Benjaminites at the rock Rimmon, offering them peace.
    14
When Benjamin returned at that time, they gave them as wives the women of Jabesh-gilead whom they had spared; but these proved to be not enough for them.
    15
4 The people were still disconsolate over Benjamin because the LORD had made a breach among the tribes of Israel.
    16
And the elders of the community said, "What shall we do for wives for the survivors? For every woman in Benjamin has been put to death."
    17
They said, "Those of Benjamin who survive must have heirs, else one of the Israelite tribes will be wiped out.
    18
5 Yet we cannot give them any of our daughters in marriage, because the Israelites have sworn, 'Cursed be he who gives a woman to Benjamin!'"
    19
Then they thought of the yearly feast of the LORD at Shiloh, north of Bethel, east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.
    20
And they instructed the Benjaminites, "Go and lie in wait in the vineyards.
    21
When you see the girls of Shiloh come out to do their dancing, leave the vineyards and each of you seize one of the girls of Shiloh for a wife, and go to the land of Benjamin.
    22
When their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we shall say to them, 'Release them to us as a kindness, since we did not take a woman apiece in the war. Had you yourselves given them these wives, you would now be guilty.'"
    23
The Benjaminites did this; they carried off a wife for each of them from their raid on the dancers, and went back to their own territory, where they rebuilt and occupied the cities.
    24
Also at that time the Israelites dispersed; each of them left for his own heritage in his own clan and tribe.
    25
6 In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what he thought best.

    Don't disparage jackasses, rem.

Not only is God bloodthristy, but he is very inconsistent; he plays favourties alot. Like remember that guy who touched the ark of the covenant just as it was about to fall and got killed by God for it? Even David (a murderer in his own right, who also almost killed a man who simply asked for verification of David and his gang's sheep caring claims before any payment would be given) was mad and thought such a thing was too excessive. Yet David himself killed a man, commited adultery, and not only got his life spared despite commiting both acts, but his children were made to suffer for him (poor stillborn child ).

MrMoe, jack2 was referring to this passge in Judges chptr. 19: (NIV bible)

22 While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, "Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him."
23 The owner of the house went outside and said to them, "No, my friends, don't be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don't do this disgraceful thing. 24 Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But to this man, don't do such a disgraceful thing."
25 But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. 26 At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight.
27 When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. 28 He said to her, "Get up; let's go." But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.
29 When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel. 30 Everyone who saw it said, "Such a thing has never been seen or done, not since the day the Israelites came up out of Egypt. Think about it! Consider it! Tell us what to do!"

After that incident, God had most of the Benjaminite men killed, hence the reason the situation in Chap. 21 occured. Truly, who can deny this is a god of love?

O Lord, our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drowned the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded withering in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sport of the sun-flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it-for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask for it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen

    iwasyoungonce,

Oh yeah.......you think Mark twang is funny? Jehovah is torturing Mark right now as we speak in hell for saying God is bloodthirsy. Mark needed his ass kicked and he's getting paid in full. Jehovah doesn't like being called bloodthirsty......"he desires no one to die" ......that is to say of the ancient Hebrews and modern day Jehovahs Witnesses........the rest can rot or burn in hell. Now that's true love. All you who don't bow to this loving God will suffer the fate of Mark Twain.

BTW....Mark is a fibber too. I found out there was actually NO Huck finn OR Tom Sawyer. I only found a diane sawyer in the white pages.

    Jehovah is a jackass.

Rem - how dare you do this? Are you trying to say that I am a figment of peoples imagination? Are you trying to say that I want to kill everyone unless they obey me? Are you saying that I am a jealous jackass who tolerates no rivalry?

My name is not Jehovah, god damnit. My name is Rapunzal. If you pray hard enough I might let down my long hair so that you can climb up to heaven and see it. But prayer alone is not enough. You must make a sacrifice and send lots of money. I need money because otherwise I cannot get more Bibles printed so that people can find out about me. And you need to sacrifice and cut out your eye if it is making anyone stumble, Rem. Perhaps Farkel can use it as a pizza topping - I know he is looking for new varieties.

Now ASSume the position and pray hard.
