Brighid, I agree. It`s the unwritten laws that cause the biggest problems. Cofty, I sent an email to Angus Stewart explaining to him not to underestimate the power of disfellowshipping. All these men on the stand know if they cock up, bringing anything on the heads of the GB, they will be OUT.

All JWs on the stand have stuck to the same line that they have no problem with cooperating with mandatory reporting when state law requires it.

And yet, as Angus Stewart pointed out in his opening address:

#69 - Evidence will be put before the Royal Commission that of the 1,006 alleged perpetrators of child sexual abuse identified by the Jehovah’s Witness Church since 1950, not one was reported by the Church to secular authorities. This suggests that it is the practice of the Jehovah’s Witness Church to retain information regarding child sexual abuse offences but not to report allegations of child sexual abuse to the police or other relevant authorities. - [Emphasis and highlighting added]

Not one, not a single one in 65 years. That is a spectacularly stunning failure.

Marvin: Why would you expect an organization not to be plagued by contradiction when the very literature they profess to follow is riddled with contradiction, including the bible ....

Toole - "...elders don't have the right to take away that right to decide what's in the best interests of the family from the family..."

Wow, he really is a lawyer.

And yet mandatory reporting exists in 2 Australian states.

Has there really been no incidents at all from these states?

Nitty Gritty , that is what happens now in the Anglican Church . I questioned my vicar about all of this a while ago and one thing he said was if someone comes to him to report abuse before the conversation goes too far he has to say " if this going where I think I must tell you that I will have to report this to the police " Or words to that effect .

Then the family can make an informed decision about what to do next . So there is no reason why the WT cannot do the same . Or just make announcements to each Cong . that any reported abuse will be passed on to the PROPER authorities .Everyone knows where they stand .

Excellent question cofty, one that I hope the commission will be asking.

What I think that needs to be specifically addressed is the fact that they will comply with the law if the law is there. What I don't think they are being squeezed hard enough is as to when do they confirm that a crime has been committed. The two witness rule still applies. If there are not two witnesses to the event, then in their view, nothing happened and there is nothing to report. They are still in compliance, in their view and this will continue to happen.

Thank you cofty for sending an email!

They had someone call me back from the Royal Commission yesterday and relay what happened to my former partner as a child. It was confidential - I don't care or fear the cult, but for his sake I'm glad. I expressed to them that the way the elder was going around in circles in how they handled it with the victim was a lie, that the WTS does handle abuse cases that way as they did exactly that with my partner. I also explained "Theocratic Warfare" yet I'm sure you explained it in more details.
