Popes 1999 order directed Law on how to handle a sex offender in priesthood

    Dec. 11

As pressure continued to build Wednesday for Cardinal Bernard Law to resign as head of the Boston archdiocese, critics said they had uncovered a "smoking gun" that shows Law and other U.S. Catholic leaders accused of covering up sex abuse allegations were acting on the popes orders.

A GROUP called the Coalition of Catholics and Survivors said Tuesday it had come across the document from among the thousands of personnel files that the Boston archdiocese made public last week. A court hearing lawsuits against the archdiocese had ordered the release.
Joseph Gallagher, a co-founder of the group, said the document was the "smoking gun" that spelled out a Vatican policy of placing image ahead of child welfare.
In the document, Pope John Paul II says a defrocked Catholic priest who had a history of molesting boys should leave the areas where his "condition" was known or stay put as long as it caused no scandal.
"That would explain why [other] bishops have done the same thing as Cardinal Law theyve moved sexual offenders from parish to parish without notifying the parishioners," Gallagher said.
The May 25, 1999, document is a translation of Pope John Paul IIs order removing Robert Burns, a convicted pedophile, from the priesthood.
Donna Morrissey, a Boston archdiocese spokeswoman, said she could not comment on matters of litigation.-Associated Press and Reuters

This post disappeared for a few minutes, how bizzare. Well, lets see the document. And see what it actually says. Having said that, Law should be in jail.

It makes me wonder why it took them so long to investigate the allogations since the WT was making these very accusations way back in the 70's .It would seem that there is corruption in the legal system to a point of blatant ingnorance .I think this scandal goes way deeper than they are investigating maybe even as high up as the supreme court.

    after all:

God doesn't use child molesters (and those who harbor them to protect the image of the church, and if this report is correct, would include the Holy Father Pope himself), Satan does.

    Reborn,

Sure, jump on in before we know if this document really exists, and what specifically it says. You'll notice that the reporter who wrote the story didn't see the document, did he. So much for due process.

I wonder what the actual chances are of any of these leaders being held accountable and serving time in prison? Their leaders or ours. I was listening to a radio talk show today where survivor's lawyers were commenting that the RCC has been shelling out millions over the past decade in civil courts. With the legal system as jacked as it is, it would probably have to be proven that the pedophiles were sent to other congregations with the sole purpose of molesting children. :(

    Hey Yeru-

Are you blind or something man?

    you said:

Sure, jump on in before we know if this document really exists, and what specifically it says. You'll notice that the reporter who wrote the story didn't see the document, did he. So much for due process.

Hey buddy, I put it in nice big bold letters for you to see:

(and those who harbor them to protect the image of the church, and if this report is correct , would include the Holy Father Pope himself)

Apparently you only see what you want to see, and not what I said.

But, while were on the topic of Catholic leaders molesting kids and then covering it up to protect the image of the church, I notice Seven did not post the ENTIRE article taken from MSNBC, a reputable news agency:

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PROPENSITY WAS KNOWN The popes order came in response to a memo Law wrote to the Vatican in which he explained that the archdiocese had assigned Burns to two Boston-area parishes even though it had been advised by a center for troubled priests that the man should not be given a job that would put him in contact with children because of his history.

This propensity was known to officials within the Archdiocese of Boston, but overlooked in favor of Father Burns solemn assurance of his ability to control his impulses, according to the cardinals memo.

At the time the memo was written, the archdiocese said it was aware of at least six young men whom Burns allegedly molested while he worked in Boston between 1982 and 1991.

Burns came to Boston from the diocese of Youngstown, Ohio, where his problem had been noticed.

Burns pleaded guilty in 1996 to criminal charges that he had sexually assaulted two boys in New Hampshire. He was sentenced to two consecutive four- to eight-year terms in jail.

McLaughlin said he had confirmed reports of molestation involving more than 40 priests and was prepared to bring charges based on five or six of them, involving about 30 victims.

But he said he agreed to drop a prosecution to spare the victims, some of whom were as young as 10 years old when they were molested, from having to testify in a courtroom in front of their tormenters.

BOND FOR PRIEST ON TRIAL Law and the Boston archdiocese could see more bad publicity Wednesday:
The Rev. Paul Shanley posted $300,000 cash bail on Wednesday. Shanley, 71, has been charged in Boston with 10 counts of child rape and six counts of indecent assault and battery for allegedly abusing boys at a church in Newton from 1979 to 1989.

A former Boston Archdiocese leader, the Rev. Thomas Daily, now the bishop of Brooklyn, N.Y., said in a sworn deposition that the church knew Shanley had advocated sex between men and boys when it promoted him to lead a parish in 1983.

I suppose sworn depositions, convictions in a court-of-law, etc all count as hearsay too right?

Maybe simple emoticons will spell it out for the mentally challenged regarding the Roman Catholic Church.

The public is as hell and the image of the church is

Again, more credible examples of religious leaders in power abusing the authority religion gives them over people who submit themselves to such nonsense.

    Reborn,

I make no excuses at all for Cardinal Law, I think the man should be in jail.

The Rev. Paul Shanley posted $300,000 cash bail on Wednesday. Shanley, 71, has been charged in Boston with 10 counts of child rape and six counts of indecent assault and battery for allegedly abusing boys at a church in Newton from 1979 to 1989.

If the church paid Shanley's bond that would be one more thing I would be HIGHLY critical of Law for. Daily needs to resign too.

Hey Reborn, Thanks for posting the "ENTIRE" article. I wasn't able to. No attempted cover up on my part I assure you. :)

Again more credible examples of religious leaders in power abusing the authority religion gives them over people who submit themselves to such nonsense.

Only after decades of lawsuits and media coverage will people finally wake up to religion. Probably not in our lifetime. It's become a business with only the "good politicians" not the good men among the leadership rising to the top. How sad for the sheep.
