Firstly, do you think Father Christmas (Santa Claus) exists? I do. Is it lying to children to tell them he exists? (JWs say it is)

Also, a little request. My work friend is being Santa (on behalf of the man himself of course) at the local supermarket. I would like to send a joke email around about it to everyone at work.....anyone got any funny santa pics? Sort of like santa with a kid saying something really funny to him or whatever?

    Thanks

I feel a little uneasy about this one Sirona. I don't really like the idea of lying to children about anything, and so telling them that Santa Claus exists - hmm... The jury's still out though.

I always told my kids that Santa Clause was a way that presents get to them at christmas and that sometimes people dress up to help.

I think most children figure out on their own that there is no santa claus the way they figure out on their own that their imaginry friends don't exist. To suppress Santa is to suppress their imagination. Take your pick which is the most harmful. They'll have plenty of time the rest of their lives to believe in nothing, might as well let them have a few years of optimism.

I agree Franky, they just wise up to it as they get older and by that age is not cool to believe it Santa anyway and they think they are too old for all that kids stuff!. I think it just adds to the excitment and build up of christmas - I dont see the harm. We havent told our kids there is definately a real santa out there, and I think they can tell its just someone in a costume when we see one in a shop, but they still get very excited, I think purely because christmas is such a great time for kdis.

Last Christmas, I was questioning my little niece about Santa Claus. Because my sister is a JW, my niece knew that Santa wasn't real, but I was curious to hear in her own words what she thought.

Me: So is there really a Santa Claus?

Niece: (seriously) No, he's not real.

Me: That's right, he's just a man dressed up in a suit.

    Niece: Yeah.

Me: Yep, just like Mickey Mouse isn't real; he's just a man in a suit. And Santa is just a guy in a suit at the shops.

Niece: (eyes wide) But Mickey IS real!

At this my sister and I exchanged looks (trying not to laugh) and turned the conversation to something else.

    Too cute!

Yeah but can you prove Santa Claus doesn't exist? Have you checked everywhere in the universe?

Better believe in him to be on the safe side then. After all, if you're wrong, you've lost nothing, but if you're right, think of the presents! And leave a glass of sherry out on Christmas Eve.

I personally don't like to lie to kids about anything either, and went I left the JW's, I was determined never to teach any kid about SC and lambast any parent who did (angry sort I was!!). Now I feel differently, especially for the little ones. If children believe there is a Santa, let them. Just don't use it like my parents did, making fake phone calls to the North Pole telling Santa how bad us children were...
