I am reading several books right now.... one called Papal Sin by Garry Willis. Its about how the hierarchy of the Catholic Church (right on up to the Pope) is in modern times just as guilty as the popes of old who committed great abuses.

The modern popes, though, have been much more subtle. It talks about the distortion of truth, lies and scandals, ie homosexuality in the priesthood, celibacy rules, the Nazis and the Church, etc. It talks about how the majority of Catholics don't follow the papal directives and how it reflects the failure of the leaders. It also exposes how they use the Bible when it suits them and twists it when it suits them.

This is a great idea............. it will encourage me to read more. I am always looking for a good book to hold my attention. I havent read a book in months, the last one was Red Dragon, and it was great. I like these kind of thrillers.

I have also been trying to rent old movies of classics, like Of Mice and Men, To kill A mockingbird, A streetcar Named Desire, since as a JW I didnt do much reading ........., I find I am craving these old classics. I would also like to find the books to these movies, and read them and put them in my library as being read.

The books in my libray are of no use to me now,,,,,,,,,, all the JW books. But I love books and feel I just cant throw them away. But it is nice to have COC , and ISOCF right next to them.....

Does anyone eles like the old classics, say for instance, Jane Eyre???? I love this story.

I need to get down to books a million and get some new pretty bound books, I love to read before bedtime.

    Again, great thread going here.

Lyin I love "Jane Eyre"! My sister and I just rented the newest movie version of it a couple of weeks ago and it was very good. It was very true to the book. I love the classics. Thomas Hardy's novel "Jude the obscure" is another favorite. A more recent favorite is "The handmaids tale" by Margaret Atwood.

So many great books out there!

Ah......."Jane Eyre." When my daughter was about 12, she discovered romance paperbacks. I was horrified! I promptly went out and bought her a copy of "Jane Eyre" and told her "If you want to read romance - read the good stuff." She did.....and grew to love the classics much more than her mother.

Currently reading Scott Turow's new book "Reversable Errors" - pretty good. Read "The White" recently. True story of young white girl captured by the Indians before Revolutionary War. Really quite good. She had her life story documented by a doctor back then. For all her troubles, a wonderful woman of spirit - Indians & whites recognized that. Not a saint, just a good, strong woman.

Am also reading Diane Wilson's book on JW's. Very good and told from a woman's viewpoint. I can relate - and that's an understatement.

Am also reading Combating Cult Mind Control by Steve Hassan. Rereading. Forgot what GOOD INFORMATION is in that book! Paraphrasing: "If anyone can get a group of x-cult members together - that's an amazing accomplishment. Because x-cult members dread groups."

ooof! This thread grew while I was gone! How to respond to everybody??

COMF, Yes! A gramme IS better than a damn!

Six, you might like Robbins. I read "Jitterbug Perfume", "Another Roadside Attraction", "Skinny Legs and All", "Still Life With Wood Pecker", and "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" but it's been years ago. I have particularly fond memories of references to yoni.

Mega, when you get done with "The Holographic Universe" you'll have to tell us about it.

Wow Aztec! Nietzche??? You're not just another pretty face are you?

Mulan, Yep that's the one! Aldous Huxley. I related to the Savage a bit, but I felt more sorry for his mother. BTW you're right, "The Poisonwood Bible" is an excellent book! I would recommend it too.

Onacruse, you're reading all three of those at once? Which one would you recommend I read first?

Lyin, I like the classics too. You know what you should do is get the books and read them first. Then watch the movies. That's a good line-up for starters too. "Of Mice and Men" is great even though sad. Anything by Steinbeck is fantastic IMO.

I LOVE to read, but like Mega says, there's so many good books! I'll be a while catching up with everyone here. Unfortunately, I'm way behind all you guys when it comes to the "apostate" books. Haven't read my first one yet. Would really like to read Crisis of Conscience, but I'm just not sure how to go about it ......well, surreptitiously.

Aztec, at the risk of making Beck jealous ( this oughta be good ), I must say that you are most certainly a pretty face. Watch all the male (and hey! maybe even some female) posters dogpile in here in agreement. However, perhaps I should start a new thread for that called "Aztec is absolutely stunning" because this is a Book Club thread after all!

Speaking of books, another one that I re-read recently is "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck.
