My son was born in 1967 and we were told he would never go to school in this "present system of things" Now I'm wondering how in the world he ever received his Masters Degree in English without going to school.

My grandfather and mother were both active JW's when they published this nonsense. My family accepted it as "the inspired prophecies of the faithful and discreet slave" and fell prey to this.

When I was younger my sister often told me my grandfather would tell her she would never get to high school or grow up. My sister is now 35.

What about my mom who believed she would never grow old? She is now 55 with no education beyond high school and no savings to fall back on.

And my grandfather? Well he spent his entire life peddling their magazines. He is now dead.

I became a JW in the early 1940s. The natural brother and sister that studied with our family gave us that assurance and urged us kids not to think about marriage until "the new system of things." We would never see old age in this system. Both were on their deathbeds in the 1970s and both were greatly disappointed that the end hadn't come yet. But until the very day they died, they both believed that the end would come before they fell asleep in death, that it was perhaps only hours away. We told an "anointed" sister in her 90s, who was dying around the same time, that it would be wonderful for her that she would be changed instantly and see Jesus the instant she died. She and her husband had been Brooklyn Bethelites for about 40 years. Her reply: "We can't be sure. We will have to wait and see. I am not so certain about anything anymore."

I believe this paragraph (Thanks, Else) should be cut and pasted, and you should email it to every NON-JW you know, with a subject line that says, "Are JWs a destructive cult?"

The only way to stop this cult is to stop them from getting more recruits. Those that are lifers, are, well, in for life.

I knew about the WTBTS publishing this kind of information, but reading the actual words is disturbing to say the least. So sad.

I just wonder what the hell current witnesses think when they read crap like this. This has hurt so many people in so many ways thinking that the end was right around the corner. Thank God I didn't wait and starting living my life.

Why thank you Ashitaka: "You know, if you were only 5 YO when that was written, you wouldn't be 'old' yet," how did you know I was just beginning to read!!

I was born around this time, and my mother used to tell me years ago when I was in high school that she could remember having me on her lap at a District Convention one year, and the speaker telling the audience that all the mothers out there with kids on their lap will never have to send their children to school. Of course I'm way beyond school now. But of course when I've subtly mentioned this to her, she basically shrugs it off like it's no big deal. I believe that's what the majority of witnesses do if you ever mention anything like this.....they just shrug it off and continue to peddle books and say the end is right around the corner.....too bad they can't step outside of the box!

Obviously the WT figured out very early on that you can never go beyond what is written if you do the writing.

My heart breaks for these poor individuals who were loyal enough to get so horribly screwed.
