Read the book on this movie is based, and see what it does to the JW notion -- shared by a large segment of fundamental apocalyptic religions-- that today's world is worse--more evil and immoral than at any time in human history-- truly the ``Last Days"

I saw it today. I thought it was good from a historical perspective. Plenty of brutality. Hey but a disappointing ending! It called for payback bigstyle but the rematch of the two gangs got broken up by the army who in the end mortally wounded 'The Butcher' also.

Daneil Day-Lewis should get best actor. He did such a great job in this movie. It was so good in fact that I told my dub aunt about it. BIG MISTAKE....

I was thoroughly disapponted by GoNY. Too long, too melodramatic, too boring. Did I mention it was too long?

I saw an interview with Marty and Leo on the Today Show, and thought it was going to be this powerful, inspiring story of "the hands that built America." The only people that would be inspired by this story are cutlery salesmen and hack screenplay writers.

DiCaprio and Diaz had no chemistry together. I did enjoy Day-Lewis' performance, however.

    "The Gangs of JW Com".

    LOL@RF hahahaha

I saw "Catch me if You Can" night before last. Enjoyed it. I might see it again, but I'm definitely seeing Gangs of NY again.

As for the ending, ISP, just imagine there really is no possible ending. It wouldn't be honest, and it would have ruined the movie. IOW, Is there an ending to us? No. Not even when we die.

It made me think, what exactly AM I doing with my life everyday? Besides the usual need to make a living what else do we do?

I decided I'm going to turn off the damn TV for one thing, and think of something else to fill the time with. Uh...besides posting to JWD. hahahaha

I had to change the font to keep from yelling. 1/3 of my post would not go any smaller then about 18.

Well I will be the disagreeing voice this time.

I thought it was right up there with the worst movie of all times. I thought the violence was excessive (and not because I'm a prude and was offended by it or anything) and the story was way loooooong. I just didn't even think the actual story was that good. I found the whole thing depressing.

Maybe I am too much of an optimist, but I find movies that just dwell on all the worst traits of humanity, which this one did, to leave me feeling ....almost empty.

Yes, I did think Daniel did a superb acting job...I mean I really hated the guy, but Leo was basically a wuss. I don't know, I just didn't care for it. My $.02 c.

I saw Gangs of New York today.....and it was long. I really enjoyed it - and was impressed at the meshing of the issues. Church, politics, money, immigrants, gangs, Civil War, Irish ...... etc. The Catholic Church was actually much more active in slum rents & politics than was shown. They were major slum owners - and extremely powerful politically. Ah well, another movie perhaps?

I would have thought DiCaprio would have been thinner, though. Afterall, he had spent 15 yrs in Hellsgate Reform School......and I'm sure they didn't feed the kids that well waaaay back in 1850/60.

I've heard of the Bowery Boys before, in old cartoon kinda stuff - had no idea they were really a gang.

It was violent and bloody - but for some reason? I think it probably was much worse than portrayed.

Until about 6 months ago, I had never heard of the Irish riots in NY before. I watched some about it on the History channel. I suspect they put it on to go hand-in-hand with the movie coming out. It was brought out in the History program that the Irish weren't racial against the blacks before the Irish came to America.

But because so many thousands of the Irish were drafted to front lines and were killed in the Civil War to "free the slaves" - they became racists, seeing the blacks as the reason the Irish were being drafted & killed.

I thought the ending quite fitting - no one really won. Just thousands and thousands killed and the city continued. Pretty much like any history.

waiting, I liked the way you summed it up. And what you said here:

. The Catholic Church was actually much more active in slum rents & politics than was shown. They were major slum owners - and extremely powerful politically. Ah well, another movie perhaps?

I agree, I thought the same thing and suspect there is probably a reason "Marty" perhaps chose to "Not go there" especially at this time? Just a thought on my part.

It has been a long time running that he hasn't been honord with an Oscar for his directing. The movie was bold and probably not easy for some to look at. Maybe he felt there has to be a line drawn even as hasrh as it was. He just might get it this time.

This movie ain't no Lord of the Rings. A total reality check. I loved it. Long movie but I hated getting up to make the pee pee run. I'll own the DVD on this one.
