How much did you give to the WTS?

There is a lot of talk about the WTS wealth, and even perhaps the idea that they are running out of money, hence the reduction at bethel.

I grew up a witness, so most of the time I really didn't have money to give. I really preferred toys and things like that. As I got older, and got a job as a teenager, then again, my money was spent on more expensive toys, and spending money hanging out with friends.

I got married young, and stayed active as a witness for about 4 more years. Then I spent money on bills and basic living expenses.

During this entire time, I never gave more than $5.00 for the "worldwide work" or whatever it was. Everytime the assemblies said they needed more money, I never gave. When the hall needed money to pay electricity or whatever, I did not give. The only exception would be when I purchased the magazines or books. And that was when they required it.

I wonder how many are like I was. I mean, lets face it. To raise a family requires a lot of money. A lot of hard earned money. I was not about to piss it away without getting something in return. And when I was younger, there just was no extra anyways.

Now of course, we hear about the zealous old brother or sister who gave their life belongings to the WTS in their will, but really, how much is that? Did not happen that often, and most witnesses have no money anyways.

Now, as I have grown a little older, and hopefully a little wiser (still have much to learn) I would be happy to contribute towards a cause or charity that I believe in. But not the witnesses of course. But back then, there was no way in hell I was going to give any money to the WTS if I didn't have to. And I was a fairly good productive little witness. I did my talks, I went out in service, I did the part. Just gave no money.

So, how many of you actually did donate? Was it a regular habit, was it a lot? Change in the bottom of the pocket? Other than real estate, maybe the WTS is hurting for money these days.

    Hi freedom96:

We were in much the same situation as you were. However despite the fact that we didn't have a lot to donate financially, we were supporting the WTS. We'd go to all the meetings. Of course that meant proper attire, and money had to be spent on meeting clothes and footwear. That all adds up. Plus we spent 20 hours a week or more in study, preparation for meetings, meeting attendance, field service and so on. We had the book study in our home for about 5 years. We had wear and tear on our vehicle from driving back and forth to meetings and in field service, and the increased insurance premiums because of the mileage.

My husband and I sat down one day and figured out that what we VOLUNTEERED in TIME, and spent on gas, clothing, car maintenance and such in order to just BE A JW, amounted to about $10,000 a year (based on our wages at the time). Yet we couldn't squeeze a dime out of our butt to put in the contribution box and got sneered at for it by other JWs.

We ended up opting for putting the $10,000 in our own pocket instead. Life is good now, and the WTS still isn't getting one thin dime out of us.

    Love, Scully

Money can always be made up so I never really even think about that. However, the most devastating thing I gave to the WTS was, TIME. You can't get that time you wasted on them back.

A BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR!?!? That's ridiculous! (mind you, I'd heard of this before, but nonetheless, it's still crazy) How can they possibly say they are a humble organization "simply" serving Jehovah?

Well, for starters, one single gift of appoximately $112,000 for 4 years of Bethel service. Their word on the matter at the time we served, 1968 - 1972, was that our time was worth about $28,000 a year each (If memory serves).

Of course, during that time, I received the equivalent of a 4 year college degree in knowledge (also their words). And "free" room and board, scriptural counseling and the "loving" association with the brothers at Bethel. What a blessing!

In addition time spent in the FS and wear and tear no vehicles.

I still haven't fully recovered from my "blessing". I'm not that good at math, perhaps the fine brothers could calculate my total worth to them over a 20 year period

    JH-

Thanks for the info on the WTS status, and I realize that a lot of money is brought in with publishing, so ultimately, yes, I don't think they are hurting too much.

Just wondering really how much money is being given out of "love" for the organization. My assumption is much like what Scully said, that after spending money on living expenses, and then the cost of just even going to meetings, and putting on that JW smile that there just wasn't much left over to contribute.

Money in publishing, yes! Money given for the sake of just giving...... interesting to find out.

What I gave to the watchtower, was a couple of cars to sell their books and magazines, throughout the years. I gave my time to them. By giving my time to them, I wasn't with my family. I gave them the first place in my life. Every decision I took was for the good of the Watchtower. Money wise, I didn't put much in the contribution boxes, because It cost a bundle just for cloths, and a 4 door car to please them. A person can spend thousands of dollars a year just to be a witness, and put nothing in the contribution boxes. It sounds cheap not to put money in the boxes, but money was put elsewhere just to follow them.

    How much?

How can you calculate the loss of precious time from your family, time you can never replace? I added up the years stolen from our family to be salesmen/women for a publishing company with no benefits provided for its employees.........it came to ONE HUNDRED AND THREE years! I WANT THOSE YEARS BACK! I might not be able to turn back time, but I will use every opportunity available to expose the WT for what it really is!, and to save the rest of my family from devoting THEIR precious time to this very weathy publishing company!
