Vester was obviously overly obsessed with race. His own words and actions make that clear, not just his murderous acts but also his lawsuits and the notion that mass shootings of blacks was abhorrent but mass shootings of non-blacks was inspirational - how much more racist can one be? Unless he has been diagnosed as having mental illness then it is unfair to assume that is the cause. Such claims excuse every other racist murderer which is obviously wrong. Why can't he just be an ugly, unpleasant person?

Some pages previously someone commented about hunting and I want to make clear that I am not against guns at all. I am against inappropriate guns, especially in the wrong hands.

Given that people seem fine with the controls on fully automatic weapons then it seems we're all in agreement with the idea of having some controls. All we disagree about is exactly where those controls apply and which weapons they cover. No one argues that people should be getting on planes with guns for instance and I think the air marshal thing is mostly propaganda than reality because of harsh realities of commercial costs (how much was spent on air fares for them? shouldn't that figure show up in a budget somewhere? why doesn't it?).

I think hunting rifles warrant the least control, especially in places where hunting is common. But if you are in the middle of Chicago, no - you don't get to walk out with a rifle. There needs to be recognition that all places and all guns are not the same.

There is no reason for semi automatic rifles or pistols that have no use in hunting unless they are accompanied by strict training and licensing regimes plus responsibility. It doesn't work if you don't keep your guns secured - they end up in the wrong hands if you don't. Make people responsible for things done with the weapons that they are responsible for. Yes, you'll need to pay insurance premiums to protect yourself against lawsuits. No one is taking your guns off you, your 2nd amendment rights aren't being curtailed - but you are held accountable for your actions and your weapons and what is done with them.

Fully automatic weapons have no place outside the military. Period.

Finally, the 2nd amendment should be re-written to bring it up-to-date. The idea of weapons being necessary to shoot at the government is not just outdated and silly for one of the worlds largest and most established democracies, it's also dangerous and encourages an anti-government, right-to-shoot narratives that sadly convincing to a small few, dangerous people.

Vester was also obsessed with his sexuality, that doesn't make him heterophobic. Words have specific meanings for a reason.

He was reported for being mentally imbalanced at multiple jobs, he was suggested medication, but refused to take it, he had multiple documentations of irrational paranoia. But, no, his mental state has nothing to do with anything, let's just ignore all of that and label him with the wrong definition of a word, call him bad and talk about what a bad person he is so we can focus on our own pet issues.

Im not ignoring this - I'm willing to accept this. As long as you're willing to accept the guy was racist.

talk about what a bad person he is so we can focus on our own pet issues - no thanks, I'll leave that to Guardian columnists.

Well if we're going to go into gun control, then I'll say this. And I say this as a former behavioral health clinician.

All gun sales should be subject to FFL plus a mental health/substance abuse screen.

It would not stop everything, but it would pick up some glaring mental health cases, and reduce the opportunity for felons to get guns.

There's a report out by NBC that says he obtained the gun legally and nothing in his background disqualified him from buying the guns.

I will say this, I am NOT against ALL gun control. I also believe people don't need fully automatic weapons or silencers. Semi-auto is fine by me. I only have (1) bolt action rifle with 6-round magazine. However, it's the most dangerous in my hands. Why? Because I can hit a 2" circle at 600 meters with it. No need for full or semi auto. It's not even classified as an "assault rifle." It's technically a biathlon rifle made in Sweden. Tikka T3 Sporter.

I understand what the concept of racism is and am not convinced, at this point, that it applies to him, as stated above fro the reasons above. "Everyone hates me because I'm black" is not racism, nor is a response to Root specifically, as it seemed to be phrased. If more comes out showing that he was targeting white people as a whole as opposed to specific people he felt wronged him, then I would easily change my tune. But one statement among many conflicting ones is not enough to use such a specific label, no.

At best, calling him racist is errant, lazy word usage. I'd say he was paranoid delusional with the main focus being perceived attacks on his race and sexuality, as an accurate definition.

On the other hand- there's a good argument for taking the view that anybody who is racist and prejudiced is mentally ill in the first place. Living with racially prejudiced views is a mentally unstable way of living life and looking at life and people anyway- no matter what ethnic background someone has. There's good and bad in all races. Mentally stable and unstable in all races

    @Billyblobber

I'm white. If I posted the phrase "black [deleted]!" on twitter and FB and then shot two black people at point blank range it would be fair to call me racist.

I'd say he was paranoid delusional with the main focus being perceived attacks on his race and sexuality - racial bigotry and mental illness aren't mutually exclusive. He was probably paranoid and racist.

Ok, away from the "gun aspect" of this story, and back to part of the matter. Here is a tidbit I just discovered on a news site describing some of the murderers problems from his personnel file:

"Dennison said Flanagan reported straight from a press release "instead of doing some original reporting," documents said.

Flanagan also filed "gratuitous coverage and promotion" of a church instead of using "critical thinking and questioning skills to produce truly memorable television stories," Dennison's memo said."

Wow!!!! I wonder which "Church" Flanagan was gratuitously promoting? Can you believe they actually wrote that he lacked "critical thinking skills"? CULT ALERT! CULT ALERT! There is no doubt in my mind being raised a JW definitely contributed to his psychosis.
