    Amen

    Prohibition

    • didn't eliminate alcohol
    • did create dangerous alcohol that actually harmed people and created a black market for criminal enterprise

    Drug War

    • Hasn't eliminated drugs
    • has created a black market enterprise and countless ruthlessly violent cartels

To clarify I'm pretty neutral on the whole gun law thing, I don't know enough about the evidence. I was just making the point that the correlation between being a JW and shooting someone was made. But none of us have actually looked at any evidence for that. So on the same basis, whoever mentioned the correlation with gun laws wasn't speaking out of turn and didn't deserve the jibes, because it could be argued that there is a stronger link with the gun laws than with someone being raised a witness - especially as this murderer apparently wasn't even raised as a very strict witness. That's all.

And to be perfectly honest, as I live in the UK, I really couldn't give a **** if you guys across the Atlantic are so in love with your gun rights. One thing is for sure you seem pretty touch about it. Sorry I spoke.

There is a common but untested formulation that the JW influence somehow makes people become mentally unstable whereas it is likely closer to the "truth" that individuals with a vulnerability to mental instability are attracted to the JWs message or find something in it to connect with.

For non-Witnesses who hate this system, are preoccupied with anxiety about their future and wonder what it's all about the Witnesses provide a ready explanation and solution.

Yes, all humans are to a large extent under the "influence" of parents in terms of the home and religious environment but just as importantly are genetic predispositions.

Epidemiological studies have established that specified mental health disorders are hereditable; that is, if one individual in the family is a diagnosed with clinical depression the odds are increased that others in the family will also have a tendency towards developing clinical depression. Twin studies also show that it is not so much the shared environment that increases the likelihood of co-occurring mental health disorders because twins separated at birth and raised in different households also show a co-occurrence of specified mental health disorders.

Blaming the environment is easy: It looks like the obvious cause. Looking more closely at the role of predispoising variables and genetic makeup is not easy to do because they are "invisible" but these variables provide a more complete picture of cause and effect.

Wing...all your points are accurate, but you're overlooking the 400 pound gorilla in the room. That is the GUN SHOW LOOPHOLE, which allows any bubba, psycho, felon, gang-banger, or ISIS inspired zealot to obtain legally, in 33 of the 50 states, a semi-auto assualt weapon PLUS all the ammo rounds you could want.

You mention Switzerland. Well, sorry, but while they DO have one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the world, they are ALSO highly regulated. For example, they have background checks JUST TO BUY AMMO. Psych problems are looked at....yes, just to buy a carton of .22 cal bullets for rabbit hunting.

Yeah...so much for a "well regulated militia" as provided by the 2nd amendment. SMH.

As far as defending ourselves from King George...well, by that logic, all households should have a missle battery in their backyards, and an M1 Abrams sitting in the driveway. 😏

Gun control works well in other countries; the U.S. is notoriously horrible with both gun violence and portion of the population in jail (and length of prison time, and a ton of in-prison issues, etc.).

Unfortunately, Pandora's Box has already been opened, and there are so many guns already circulating in the country that they're impossible to "ban" in any fashion at this point.

Stricter regulations on obtaining them would be a HELP, but the pro-gun crowd has been made so paranoid by media, politics, and conspiracy lunatics that any forward legislation in that aspect would be taken as the first step to the government banning them, so they'd never go along with it at all.

Virtually all of the people selling guns at Gun Shows are FFL dealers and still have to perform the background check.
