Little weirded out....

So...it's 1am here (give or take), and I'm browsing the web some.

    Doorbell rings.

    At 1am.

Police coming to bust my enormous MP3 collection? Hey, I'm paranoid!

It's a girl at the door! Early 20s / late teens, can't really tell (I'm just not good at that). Said she was walking down the street, and heard dogs barking, wanted a lift to the end of the road (our house was the only one on the street with the light on, which is true). To be fair, we do have coyotes around here, and the way to the end of the road runs through a fairly dark valley. She was also shaking and seemed rather alarmed, so I believed her. OTOH, it's not even half a mile to where she was going, and the street is fairly well lit.

Just drove her down to the end of the street. She was talking the whole way (about 10 min or so) - said she was deathly afraid of animals, used to live in the area, et al. Dropped her off, no problems.

I dunno. Weirded me out. Wife pointed out - proper procedure would probably have been to call the police and have them take her where she needed to go, but...

Well, what do YOU all think? Is it....perhaps...as a result of my JW upbringing that I distrust people? My mother (a good JW) always taught me that people were under satan's control, and, though I don't believe that any more...well, my instinct it always to distrust and fear first. (Police were especially bad...they SEEMED friendly, but some day...SOME DAY...they would be coming to 'get us' )

Is my paranoia a result of my upbringing? The age we live in?

    Is it unfounded? Or not?

I guess, at 1am, I couldn't really think of anything better to do than honor her request for a ride, but....I still feel....well, worried.

I mean, they, they, they make scary movies that start out like that.

Hey, but, but they make porno movies that start out like that too, man.

You may have helped that girl out more than you know. Even if she were not going to be attacked or whatever, maybe she will always remember the kindness that a total stranger showed her. That could go a long way.

Scary to think that something else could have happened. Weird to happen so late.

Yeah, on the OTHER hand, she could have just killed somebody and dropped a key piece of evidence in my truck to frame ME for the crime. What would MY alibi be? At 1am? My wife could say I was in the computer room all night, but....

See, that's what I mean...my mind always thinking the worst of people...

I'm completely unable to accept anything anyone says at face value. Someone tells me something...it's like...I KNOW it's a lie, and I try to find out what they REALLY want. Even if I have no reason to think that, all evidence points otherwise, and my intuition tells me they are sincere and I should help.

When it comes down to it, when I need to make a quick decision based on little data...my first reaction is to feel 'they are out to get me'.

Which is a perfectly valid programmed JW response.

And it unsettles me that it's still there.

Is your wallet missing? Did you let her in the house? She could have been casing the place.

The reason I say this is because several years ago, after my ex husbands birthday and he had put his birthday present boxes on the curb for the entire world to see, we got a knock on the door from a neighbor down the street. She and her boyfriend had come by talk to me. I let her in to talk to me while I changed my son's diaper and her boyfriend stayed outside.

She said she wanted to ask me about baby sitting my young son. I did notice her looking about. I spoke to her for a few minutes but told her no thank you, I wouldn't be needing a baby sitter any time soon. Later that week, we left the house for not more than 45 minutes. As we pulled out of the drive way, the neighbor girl was watching us leave. When we got back, my husbands electronic equipment had all been stolen. The thief didn't wait around to find other stuff, he came straight for the electronic and video equipment and made off with it. When they caught the thief, it was the boyfriend of the girl that had knocked on my door.

Why was this girl out walking in your neighborhood at 1 in the morning? If she is brave enough to do that, why wasn't she brave enough to walk to the end of a well lit street on her own? Why was she talking all the way? Was she trying to distract you, prevent you from asking her questions? It smells a little fishy to me.

Serves you right, for starting a 1914 thread that you don't even respond back to until the 75th post! LOL

Seriously, though, it pays to be cautious. For example, what if she said you tried to rape her? Or, like a trucker once told me that it was company policy never to stop, no matter what, to pick up a hitchhiker, especially a female...because frequently her boyfriend(s) are hiding and just waiting for the truck to stop, take a tire iron to your head, and off with the truck.

That's not thinking the worst of people, that's using your head.

Oh, sure, mock me NOW....well, if you never see me on the boards again, you'll all know who was right THEN, huh?

Is your wallet missing? Did you let her in the house? She could have been casing the place.

#1, No my wallet is fine - didn't bring it. Just took my driver's license out, and brought that (just in case)

#2, didn't let her in at all. She still could have looked through the door, looking for alarms or something. 1am does seem a strange time to case a place out though, no? (I did think that, actually, but she was right - our house WAS the only one on the street with the front light on).

For example, what if she said you tried to rape her

Honestly, that's a huge fear for me. Worldly people not to be trusted, remember? They'll say any lie, do anything to bring down a JW.

Although I'm not anymore, and I should know better than to have a 'me vs them' attitude....like I said, it's unnerving to see it hasn't gone away.

(Of course, that's not the ONLY factor. Although my dad generally had a creepy streak a mile wide, what he finally did end up serving time for was a crime he didn't actually commit, he just didn't have an alibi, so...)

frequently her boyfriend(s) are hiding and just waiting for the truck to stop, take a tire iron to your head, and off with the truck.

(I did actually bring my cell phone, before I left, I entered in my home phone #, and told my wife. I figured if anything happened, I just had to hit 'send')

Giving rides to strangers in the middle of the night. Well that is normally the beginning of some police report when they discover your body in some ditch somewhere, beaten and robbed of everything you ever owned. Basically, I think I would have turned the lights off and treated her like a Jehovah's Witnesses treats a "trick or treater" on Halloween.
