We were a very geeky bunch of late 70's-early 80's suburban American white boys in my neighborhood where I grew up.

But my all time favorite one that makes me laugh every time I think about it, was how we rigged up parachutes to our bikes using twine and trash bags. We would ride down the street as fast as we could, and then let the parachute out, which was tied to the end of our banana seat. We thought we were cool funny car racers.

Another one was inventing a previously unheard of cuss word that we could use around adults while winking at each other and giggling. Koomaka, I think it was.

So what are some geeky things you did when you were a kid?

Wrote a multi-user Bulletin Board System, on a Dec PDP-11/43, with chat, and had all the Terminals talking to each other at my school, it took awhile for the Admin to catch on, even then, he didn't know you could do that. LOL

Tried to start my own Socialist Club (that's right, I was at one time a dyed in the wool socialist. Before that I thought I was going to united all Native Americans and take their land back, by force if necessary (I was 11) I was a Socialist until about age 18 or 19 I guess.

Well I guess you could say I was training for the service- I would go around the streets after the milkman- baker,Iceman, fishman--They used to come around the streets peddling their wares. they had horse & wagon -this was when I was 10 yrs old -I would carry my bucket & shovel & collect the horse dung- then when I had a full bucket I would go door to door & sell it for 2 pence a bucket. It was good for the Rhubarb. -I made about 10 pence a week. Then of course when I became a JW I didnt need the bucket I carried a book bag filled with s....t( sound like mitt.) But I didn't even get a penny for that.

When I was five I put on the only suit I had, walked over to my neighbor who was then in his late 60's. I had some blank sheets of paper in a folder and my big Indian pencil. I told him I was there representing the company he worked for and that I was there for him to sign his retirment papers. His wife brought me in and gave me cookies and milk. I think I got this off an episode of Bewitched or some such show.

I thought that by putting inflatable armbands on my feet I would be able to walk on the water at the swimming pool or at least float really high out of the water (y'know, like dolphins do)

Of course, they just slipped onto my ankles and I ended up nearly drowning upside down with my feet sticking out the water ... it seemed such a good idea at the time!

One lad in our cong was caught by his dad (luckily) before he started his rocket powered go-cart (some bit's of wood with pram wheels): He had a fairey-liquid bottle filled with petrol tied to the back and was just about to light it!

Use to make prank phone calls.

We (my friends and I) use to call and order pizzas (like 3 or 4) to kid's homes who we did not like. How stupid was that.

We also use to call this elderly woman on a regular basis and talk like little kids and have a conversation with her...........when I look back on it now....she must have been a very lonely, and nice woman to put up with all our phone calls! What jerks we were!
