Worldly Music to Avoid

When I was a teenager,we weren't allowed to listen to a lot of groups. We couldn't listen to AC/DC because apparantly when you played their music backwards, they told you to do bad stuff. We couldn't listen to groups like Led Zepplin or Black Sabbath because they apparantly had ties with the occult(and of course don't forget Fleetwood Mac,lol).Once in a talk at our circuit assembly, the CO told us how bad heavy metal was,and warned against groups such as Twisted Sister(only he pronounced it Twister Sister, and all the teenagers nearly peed their pants from laughing).

When my husband and I got married,we weren't allowed to play "Earth Angel" or any song by Madonna.Yet years later when that elder(the one who wouldn't let us play those)got remarried,he played the remake of the song "Oh what a night".My mom took great pleasure in telling him what that song was about!lol

I was informed by my mom that I could no longer watch it because one of the people was gay; not the character, mind you, the actor!!

Yeah, I've got a JW uncle who won't watch movies or TV shows if any of the actors are known to be gay. He even refused to watch a certain movie because a different version of it years ago had a gay actor in it. Sheesh. But at least he doesn't try to stop anyone else from seeing them, so it's no big deal really. Just a bit strange.

I was at an assembly where the speaker was talking about the dangers of rap and heavy metal. He mentioned a couple of artists by name. What stood out the most was his trying to warn us about Snoop Dog(or whatever he calls himself these days. At the time he might have been Snoop Doggy Dog). The speaker called him Snoopy Dog Dog. The audience laughed. Some because they knew the speaker just made a fool out of himself. Others because they had never heard the name and thought it a funny name. He was trying to sound like an expert in modern music but came off sounding like an idiot. If you don't know what you're talking about, it's best to keep your mouth shut. He should have just stuck to the outline, presented the material and not tried to be cute.

To single out one or two artists in these talks doesn't do any good. If we are to use our bible trained conscience, then why mention any names. You can give generic information well enough so that everyone knows what is being implied. You don't have to give real life examples. On a side note, that was another thing that kinda got me to questioning things: The information was so dumbed down and handed to us like apple sauce to a baby. And like that baby we had no choice but to take it and not question it.

I remember a few other examples given from the platform by an elder.

He warned us against the song "Loser" by Beck, which had the lyric "I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me".

Also, the song by Nirvana "Rape Me" - and the audience went into shock that such a song existed.....

.....After that, I had these two songs stuck in my head. I owned both of them :)

I've always been a janis joplin fan, and used to go aorund singing "mercedes benz". I was informed that dishonored God, (due to the "oh Lord stuff)

First time i heard "Bat out of of hell" by Meat loaf, it frightned me. Later, i saw the words and really listened to it and realized it was a teenage love drama song like 'Tell laura i love her". I fell in love with Meat loaf and finally got to meet the man a few years ago. What a voice.what a guy

My parents would not let me listen to the beatles or stones. I made up for lost time by leaving home early. Can u image being a teeager in late 60's early 70's and not listening to the stones?

"Blinded by the Light" by Manfred Mann - I still don't know what those words mean - just know my mother washed my mouth out with soap when she caught me singing them! Perhaps someone else know what the heck those guys were talking about anyways???!!!!

It was probably caused by Manfred Mann's butchering of Bruce Springsteen's lyrics. Where Springsteen wrote (and recorded on his version) "...cut loose like a deuce..." - Manfred Mann's version reinterpreted those words as "...wrapped up like a douche...". A slightly different image.

They didn't do much better on their version of Bob Dylan's "The Mighty Quinn," either.

The first time I applied to be a regular pioneer, I was turned down. They gave me two reasons: I read comic books, and listened to Beatles music.

    In reference to Ed's comment.

I used to think it was sooo ridiculous that witnesses I knew would not watch a show that featured a gay character or a gay actor. There seemed to be quite a bit of freaked out homophobiacs among the witnesses I have known. For example I remember folks being up in arms about the early years of "Friends" because they featured Ross' lesbian ex-wife quite a bit.

I also got a really shocked reaction from a pioneer sister when I told her I saw the movie Philadelphia and that I thought it was very good. she said " I was not interested in seeing that movie, for fear that it would make me start to feel sorry for gay people". Pretty sick.

However, I used to come back with this argument: "we all know that the bible lists homosexuals right along side fornicators, thieves etc, so if you are not gonna watch or listen to a song, that features a gay person or is performed by a gay person - you better make sure you apply that rule to any entertainment that is performed by or features people who steal, fornicate with the opposite sex, etc"

That usually shut most of them up.

Can you imagine being a teenager in the late 60's early 70's and having a "square" haircut and wearing "square" clothes? Oh god, I hated school.
