We're in Britain, so coming to end of season, lots of squashes and pumpkins, last of the tommies. The best tip we learnt a few years ago, is to get onion seed planted around September or October. Our onions the past few years have been stonkers!

This is an older pic of our allotment, we have hens and bees. Its all good fun!

Wow that's awesome! Hey, I learned a neat trick about tomatoes - to snap off all but the top 1/4 of the plant before you plant it out and then place it in a trench horizontally with just the top turned up 90°. Apparently they grow 5ft and fruit prolifically because the snapped off leaves root up and the plant increases hydration to sustain itself. Well at least that's the theory so I shall give it a try and report back.

My hanging baskets are looking pretty good this year. They're trailing tropical shades begonias. I've put them on brackets attached to the fence posts around our decking.

Brackets on the fence posts could work for me too...

Finally got this to work... Before:

My wife is an outstanding gardner andI love fresh herbs and vegetables. She and her dad (when he was alive) had such green thumbs I bet they could make rocks bare fruit, whereas I have black thumbs of death and don't know a weed from a pumpkin. I'm such a force of destruction I was banned forever from coming anywhere near the garden and flower beds by her and her dad. The only "green" related things I am allowed to do are mow the lawn, trim hedges and fell trees. I used to be responsible for sprinkling the lawn with the Scott's grass seed/weed killer mix because if you follow the instructions it's supposed to be idiot proof. Well I just recently killed all the weeds AND grass on the north terrace, so goodbye to that responsibility. I guess Scotts never considered "Trevor Proof" ....

Oh my!!! It depends on where you live obviously. We're in New England and the growing season is relatively short. I always do a lot of herbs and am always reconfiguring my perennials. Last winter we took a big hit in long spells of extremely cold temps plus tons of snow. I did lose more stuff than usual. Right now we are coming out of a long hot humid spell and when it's like that I can't do much outdoor work so the weed s are running rampant. Today is nice so I'll be out there cleaning up.

Just planted my Christmas new potatoes. You have to buy special seed potatoes then put them in sacks filled with compost. Normally you plant pots in April, but you can buy special seed pots that have been held back artificially but will still grow in our UK weather and be just perfect for Christmas dinner. The best variety is Charlotte..
