Field Service Tricks

Does any one remember this one? As we live in the "Great White North" the weather does not always co-operate with us and sometimes we would have to go outdoors for field service in the winter months. So I remember my father giving the congregation some tips when the HOUSEHOLDER would open the door!

Yes brothers, if you place your foot near the doorstep and give a friendly jesture the HOUSEHOLDER my feel the cold coming in and invite you in. Man some people in service were not kind to this procedure, guess thats why people only squeek the door open EH!

    Any other tricks out there?

I had a whole bevy of tricks in my repartee:

    - the fake doorbell ring (engage your partner in eye contact while ringing to help pull it off)

    - working by myself ("Don't worry, I can be the one who works by himself" - heh heh)

    - selecting a fellow partner who was equally disinterested to work with

    - doing fake return visits (pick a house in neighbourhood, see that someone wasn't home and call on it as an RV)

    - dumping mags at the old folks home

    - street witness for 15 mins at 7 AM to jump start time and have breakfast at 7:30 (after going to the bank machine etc to kill more time)

What wasted time. What apalls me that is that JWs think that they register somewhere on the world recognition scale. Really, all I've ever heard is the odd JW joke on a sitcom.

Beans- Glad you posted this . I was wondering how people in the frozen tundra delt with the witness work .I think it's so unfair to expect people to freeze their buns off while selling magazines .I bet the gowth rate in the org. is very slow in those parts of the world.

I remember once it was -20C outside. So we would knock on one door, and regardless on whether they answered or not, we went back to the car and stayed there for 10 minutes to warm up. After 12-15 doors we did our two hours without talking to anyone and went home proud of ourselves!

Interesting post. I saw The Diceman episode last night where he was in Umanak in Greenland finding out what the locals do for fun. What I found interesting was how blase the locals were about the cold - they were used to it. Could it be that Alaskans or Yukon Territorians write the cold of as "a little briskness in the air"?

I was out one cold wintry day in my teenage years with another teenage sister, A lady invited us in chiding us for being out in that weather and that our mother was being negligent.

She asked if we wanted hot cocoa. We took off our outerwear and sat down. The lady had obviously been reading her Bible because there it was open on the table.

She came back with 2 steaming cups with tons of whipped cream on top.

She pointed out the scripture about doing good to Christ's brothers and that was one reason she had invited us in.

We had a nice chat about her family and ours as we drank another 2 cups of cocoa.

Our car group was frantic trying to find us. But there we were having a great time.

Since then I never went out in weather that made people wonder more than necessary if I were nuts when they saw me at their door. No burning sun, no wind chills under 20 degrees F.

Tricks to get into a home on a cold day...

    Ask to use their phone.

Offer to clean their home, babysit or prepare lunch.

Open your coat to reveal you are wearing a bikini underneath.

    Seriously,

It breaks my heart to see the elderly witnesses going door to door in this weather. It is SO cold up here and we have SO much snow. Its sad.

I remember, when I lived in a very rural part of Atlantic Canada. We'd get heaps of snow, and the roads were not always cooperative.

We'd take some days, and do our RV (return visits) where we had to drive real far, and we counted the time going there, and in between, and well...you get the picture. As sincere as I was then, it's funny how human nature still crept in, and you did everything you could to make those hours, and place those magazines.

Some days, I recall putting in about 100 miles/160 kms. in service. Some areas, were sparsely populated, and you'd drive 30 miles/50 kms., and there'd be, no one home. OH well, off to the next far away RV.

As much as I did field service, I did NOT like it, in fact I HATED IT! but you did it, because one was conditioned to do so. Looking back, I find it hard to believe I did what I did.

I used to have a lot of shame about it; not telling anyone, I was a JW. I was so ashamed and embarrassed. Now? Doesn't bother me in the least, because now I can tell people: stay away from them!

The FAKE KNOCK. You know when you'd rap your fist against the door in such a way where it sounds loud on the outside, yet you KNOW no one indoors could hear it.
