The Watchtower used to tell us that young ones should get to know the older members of the congregation because of their spiritual wisdom. I've found out that the same sort of principle applies to apostates. Get to know the elderly ones, because they have all sorts of great dirt on the Watchtower!

Anyway, the Lethbridge episode was mentioned earlier, but I forget in which thread. ("Welcome to Lethbridge...apostate capital of Canada!") Here is a scan of a contemporary newspaper article about that episode, courtesy of our apostagran Mouthy.

    Expatbrit, I remember this.

It is true, and the stir it created, reached everywhere. Lethbridge, AB., Canada, was a hotbed of Apostacy. It was almost like: if you are a Jehovah's Witness, don't go there!

Interesting to see that article again, I had forgotten all about it. Thanks for bring that back to those who did not see it.

It's sad because we all know how witnesses responded to such newspaper articles and Truth exposed. I can speak for myself in saying that...i was like the Jw's in their attitude...it wasn't until i realized a scripture that differed from their doctrines that the Truth was exposed to me in regards the situation. Thankfully i stuck with the scripture... ~FS

What a small world it is! I've driven past Lethbridge KH and I know that the yokels here call them whenever we're going over to 'warn them' (like I'm going to summon up satan or something )

Dr. M. James Penton is a Emeritus Professor of History and Religious Studies from the University of Lethbridge, Canada. His family has a long history in the Bible Students and the Jehovah's Witnesses. After Jim in a letter made certain criticisms of Watchtower doctrines and what he considered unethical practices, the Jehovah's Witness leadership started a process that ended with his disfellowshipping in February 1981. The process was so obviously harsh and unchristian that it ended with more than 80 Jehovah's Witnesses in Lethbridge leaving the controversial sect. The interesting story about this incident is written by James A. Beverly in Crisis of Allegiance (Burlington, Ca: Welch Publishing, 1986). Jim Penton has later written a number of articles on different subjects, and he also wrote the book that is the definite text on the Jehovah's Witnesses: Apocalypse Delayed -- The Story of Jehovah's Witnesses (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1985). He also has written the newest entry on the Jehovah's Witnesses in The Encyclopedia Americana, and can without any exaggeration be described as one of the world's leading authorities on the Jehovah's Witnesses. Jim lives with his wife Marilyn in Lethbridge.
