    Jesika,

    How 'bout some shock therapy?

KNOCK IT OFF! IT'S FRIGGIN' DISGUSTING! YOU LOOK LIKE A FREAK! STOP IT!

or, how 'bout dipping your fingers in something really nasty tasting? You know, not to make you feel bad, but great looking female hands are a real turn on for me. It annoys me to see a great looking girl with chewed up fingers.

Jesika, I guess for some of us, there's some little nasty habit we're aware of or, oblivious to, that others can see.

Believe it or not, I knew a woman who chewed on her: toe nails.

    I kid you not.

Anyways, my good friend he does the same. When I point it out to him, honestly, he's unaware of the fact, he's doing it. His fiance has tried to curtail it, but I think it's a 'tic' of sorts.

I am sorry, I cannot give you any tried and true remedies, although I see a few posted above and Auntie Flames.....was enough to stop me from EVER starting. Heehee! Good luck Jesika.

According to a therapist that I once knew, nail-biting is a sign of abuse, ie, the biter is acting out a self-hate message that was implanted as a child. Not necessarily sexual abuse, though many victims do nibble nails, but a re-action to a very negative message that has been planted during a childs early years.

I was biting my nails as I clicked on this thread. I have the habit in it's chronic stage. I have no fingers at all now.(that bit was a joke).

I find if I don't drink alcohol on an evening, a start to bite continually. It is quite bad, I know.

I think I would respond to the elastic band treatment, but maybe not the wearing false nails, I think this might attract too much attention at work, where I'm only just getting away with the odd bite as it is!!!

Eman-------- You know it is funny you would mention that as a reason. Since I have stated many times I was abused (sexually) at the age of 4, and that is when the "problem" started.

I really hate that I do this and it is quite painfull.

I find when I am posting or in chat and the topic is "stressful" I start biting, which is one of the only times I notice it.

I am going to try and stop right now, without any "outside" aids, just to see if it is something I can control, and then on to my smoking habit.

Thank you all for the comments, please give me more. Anything will help, unless I have tried it already. When you ask alot of people you seem to get suggestions you would have never thought of.

Of course typing might become a problem if I can no longer touch the keys without using the tips of my fingers anymore LOL.

Actually E-man is on the right track.

The biting the way you describe is a form of self-mutilation that is common to many who have been abused. It can be an issue of what is eating us inside that we are having a hard time dealing with.

I have found that by dealing with the underlying issues the "habit" often goes away. By coincidence I just picked up a book called Habit Change Workbook by Claiborn & Pedrick. You might find it helpful

This is another bad habit but not quite as disgusting, chew sugarless gum. That way, your oral fixation is taken care of, and if you do put your fingers to your mouth, you will realize you don't want to get the gum on your fingers, thus giving yourself that few seconds of thought before you start biting. Of course, at some point you will need to get over the gum chewing, but we can deal with that when the time comes.

Thanks for that Iron Gland, I gave up smoking not so long ago!!!

With regards abuse, etc, although my upbringing was not without incident, I don't think you could classify me as an abuse survivor.
